Aluminum Siding Paint Question

My house has aluminum siding on it (age unknown) and I noticed the other day after I bumped into it when it gets wet the finish on it can be wiped away pretty easily. Whatever is coming off has the consistency of thin, wet paint. Is this a standard thing with aluminum siding or is it something that should be taken care of sooner rather than later?

I know in the long-term I want to re-side but I don't really have the time or budget right now to do that, so anything I can do that will keep things in decent shape would be great.

Aluminum Siding Paint Question

As aluminium siding ages and the longer its in the elements it breaks down, the factory coating oxidizes, it will wear down to a bare surface. You can paint the siding if you wanted to.

Aluminum Siding Paint Question

Do a thorough wash. Use Jomax and a stiff scrub brush before power washing it all off. Double check when it's dry to make sure the surface isn't still chalky. Once all residue is removed, apply two coats of high quality Acrylic DTM. You should be good for several years.

Just to add that when painting aluminium siding you have to prime the bare spots of raw aluminium first, DTM primer is good for that and for your top coat, definitely a quality 100% acrylic latex, but it doesn't have to be DTM

A factory finish should never do this. I'm betting someone painted it down the line somewhere and it's simply improper paint/prep.

It is a FACT that this is what happens to aluminium sidings factory finish over time. It oxidizes, causing a powdery, chalky substance and bare aluminium to show.

Aluminum Siding Paint Question

YES! You are absolutely correct! It comes off dry! Not like wet latex, which he says he is seeing.
Hence, my thought of it being DIY painted already. Simple enough to find out though, look under some of the peeling paint and see if it's bare aluminum or factory finish!

it came off similar to wet latex after getting wet and with a small amount of pressure and friction (rubbed it with my hand.) if it dries out today i'll look at it over lunch and see if it is chalky then. there are also quite a few nicks and dings in the siding that show bare metal which probably doesnt help the situation.

is the cleaning / painting something that would be practical to DIY? the siding on the sides of the house is a vertical face and goes up 35-40 feet.
