Additives for outdoor stain to aid traction on stairs?

Hi

I am about to re-stain a long set of outdoor wooden stairs. We get a lot of wet weather in the winter (and occasional snow and ice) and I want to have good traction on the stairs. I don't want to put traction strips down due to cost - there are almost 50 steps.

Is there such thing as an additive that can be added to stain to add traction? I know there are such products for paint.

Shtoink, I have never seen an additive for STAIN. Like you said, there are additives for paint like Sharkgrip, etc. It may be a tough animal to find. I say this because stain, by its nature, is designed to SOAK in to the wood leaving very little film on the surface. I would think any additive would quickly wear off the surface of stain. Stain is generally a FLAT finish which gives some grip on its own.

Yeah - the fact that stain soaks into the wood leaves nothing on the surface to bind the traction material.

Perhaps an additive that could be mixed with a clearcoat that could go over the stained surfaces?

I posted on a similar topic awhile back with some examples of nice looking stair treads. I was shocked to see what they sold for at my local Bed, Bath and Beyond so I know what you mean. Online, I got them for a client quite inexpensively. Think outside the home improvement box and explore marine catalogs too.

Those paint additives can really tear up a paint job when used outside. And no, there are none for stains.
