Acid Staining Concrete Urns

Just bought some new concrete (or cast stone, not sure) urns I would like to acid stain. I want to go this approach so that the color actually sinks into the urn and it can naturally weather over time. There is a company, Campania International, which sells these acid stains wholesale, but I would like to do it myself. Any suggestions? Thanks!

I would see what the library has in terms of books on staining and faux finishing concrete. I would continue to search online for resources for the stains. Not sure an acid based stain that will etch the surface is what you want?

See if you can get your hands on some samples of stains and some concrete samples and do some trial and error work before taking on one of the urns.

I would also think about something like a regular solid color acrylic stain in a shade or two of the stone color you want to achieve and applying it with a sponge or something. You might check an art supply or hobby store for options too.

Your topiaries are turning into quite a project! I am sure they will look great when done though.

There are three types of penetrating concrete stains; acid stains, acetone dyes, and water based dyes. Using the dyes will give you more of an exact color with similiar looks to acid stains. You can also combine using acid stains and dyes to make some vary interesting looks.

A company called Kemiko sells all three types of concrete stains. You can also use a penetrating sealer to help protect the stain. If these urns are going to be going outside make sure you buy UV stable dyes.
