2 questions about outside paint job.

1) I plan to sand everything and wipe it all down before I paint it. Will that make it unnecessary to wash the old paint?

2) Will it be worth it to prime everything before hand, or will it be okay to paint on top of the old sanded paint and just prime any bare wood? The old paint is still in good condition.

3) There are numerous small metal sections, wood screws, etc. Will it be necessary to use rustoleum primer on those sections to do a good job? Or can I get by with water based primer with the metal too?

I want the paint job to protect well for a long time.

I'd wash it down first, then sand, then wipe off the sanding dust

Spot prime any bare wood

Spot these with oil-based primer

Good I don't have to prime everything. Save a little money.

Then I'll use rustoleum on the metal parts. Probably have to paint the metal parts with oil based paint too? Pain in the ***

Yes that was three questions. We can't edit the titles!

I plan to scrub it down with water and a little bit of dishwashing soap.
