1st Q. and a Thank You

I joined this Forum simply to thank the regular Pro's who contribute their time and knowledge. Slick, the Harley guy, and all the others with in-the-field experience. Thank You. The joy of a brand-new Purdy brush or a Wooster roller can't be beat!

Q. Brand new deck done by contractor. Ipe wood 5/4 x 6 deck boards spaced by the 16d nail method. Touch sanded (and I'm unclear on what that means) and stained with Messemer's Hardwood stain. Nice surface job with no overlaps, but the sides of the deck boards are hit and miss.

What's the best way to stain the sides of installed deck boards?

I've used a 2" disposable "chip brush' with fair results in the past. My Olympic sprayer leaks like a sieve at all connections so that's out.

Thank you and welcome

You problem is a tough one, and there's only so much you can do
Often when staining using a big "stainer" type brush, you can get the sides a little when doing the decking surface

Sometimes a smaller stainer is used in between first, then a larger one does the surface

The width of a nail doesn't leave much room though, you may have it as far as it will go

You might try a mini-pad, but it will be slow going, and you'll have to be careful about messing up the surface stain

Buy a bulk pack (6 usually) of spray bottles (think Windex or other household cleaner type sprayers), from the cleaning product section of local big box. Your fingers will get tired squeezing, but it will allow you to spray the stain between the boards, and just have to smooth it out with a cheap brush (also get a bulk pack , as jamming it between the boards will destroy then pretty quickly)
