Youthful Diversions

I've been following another thread -
It brings up a lot of memories.

The memories!! -
"dredged" this up, from the past.
(Stupid kids - do stupid things - I didn't get the "Nobel" prize, for "Stupidity" -
for nothing!!)
(Still working, on the prize, for "Ugly"!)
There's always hope!

Youthful Diversions

After an unplanned, brief, "hiatus" from this thread -
As a result of unexpected problems -
Friend with Lap-Top, computer: infected with "Nasties"!
And -
Plumbing repair -
I sure do love old, galvanized pipe! - wish they utilized "Unions", more often!
(Thank "God" for "Saw-Z-All's" and "cheater bars"

Also, trying to remember what happened!
("Old-"Timers", problem!)

Back in a few!

Youthful Diversions

Some background.
My family moved into a nice small town - 1956.
Far, Western Suburbs - of Chicago, Ill.
Very, nice town - great for children to grow-up in.
Pop. - about 11,000 plus.
(Now it's a whole, lot bigger - to say the least!)

The area of the town our house was in had been part of a very, large
"Nursery" - trees.
Lot's of trees in our "hood".
Many of the houses had rows of trees - that the developers/builders
hadn't cut down.
Nice place!

Right across the driveway from our house was a "Cul-de-Sac" - several
of the houses on it - their backyards died into a river -
"The River Kwai", "The River of no Return", "The River Styx" -
sorry, I don't remember.
("Styx" - alright band!)
On our side of the river was a large, undeveloped park -
(To us, as kids, it was HUGE!)
And, out in the middle of the river was a HUGE island!
The perfect place for a bunch of "urchins" to escape the scrutiny, of the
adults!!
(Also, to create "mischief"!!)
We were successful!!

Youthful Diversions

As, young, adolescent boys were not satisfied with the environment -
and the "youthful", "diversions" it provides.
So: we "Upgrade"!
("MS" could understand!)
We come up with something!

One of our "Gang", finds out about something.
This involves something that "young", "pukes" would love!
It involves things that we would love -
"Explosive devices" - "Rockets" - "Mortars"
(Wouldn't, "Werner Von Braun", "Goddard", and "NASA" be proud!!!)

This isn't "mere", "mischief" 1.0 -
We're going to take it to "Mischief" 2.0!!!
YEAH!

I was going to go into the details of what we did.
Then, I realized -
who knows who frequents this site!
I don't want to bring any "heat" down here!
It could be young people!
I'll continue with the story, without some of the details.

We want detaaaaaails. It's probably nothing worse than what they see happening in video games and movies.

Just put a - KIDS, DON'T TRY THIS AT HOME! - disclaimer at the beginning of the post.

Of course, a smart alec kid will say, "I won't try this at home.... I'll try it out in the river"

"gma2rjc"

I'm still side-tracked by computer problems (a friend's) and -
Plumbing repairs.
You start trying to take apart 40 - 50 - 60 year old, galvanized pipe -
Sometimes, you have to resort to cutting - having things break -
Argggh!!
What Fun!!
(At least, they get new copper pipe!)

As far as adding a "disclaimer" -
"KIDS, DON'T TRY THIS AT HOME!"
the things we used are still very, readily, available.
The potential for injury, was much greater than us young, "puppies"
had any idea of!!!
What a surprise!!
(I don't want to give anybody, ideas!)

Later!

So, we have our hands on a "Toy".
We play with this "toy".
We're gaining range, velocity, and control.

We've been around here for a while.
The "River", and it's surrounding, "environs" are ours.
Across the "River", is getting developed.

People move in (across the river).
They have young "pukes" - just like us.
We're on one side of the river - they're on the other.
"Turf", "wars" break out!
Luckily, just "rock fights" - (throwing stones across the river - no,
nobody shot anybody's eyes out!)

The altercations ensue!
One breaks out - we out-number them -
we also have some of our "people" on the "Island" -
(they don't know that!)
the range has been cut down (from one side of the river to the other -
to our advantage!)
They retreat!
It's a victory for "our" side!

They go home and who shows up?!?
An older, "puke" (stout of frame and stature!).
(Somebody, told their older brother!)
He proceeds to throw stones at us - we return the favor.

"jiju1943"

Join the club!
Sad to say - but: Boo, hoo, hoo!!!
WAAAAAH!
(Unfortunately, I think I know the feeling!)
(If you can't send money - "negotiable bonds"!??!)

The, person of "stature", and "stout" of frame - decides he's going to
cross the river (to "OUR side"!!)!
He's found what we have put into place, something to get from the other side of the river, to get to the island.
(A fallen tree)
Also, since it's Summer, the level of the river is low - our little path of
"stepping-stones" (that we put into place so that we could gain access
to "Our" island) is exposed.
He's coming across, from the island to our side of the river!!
Yipes!!!
What are we going to do????
We have one of the "Toys", that we've put together - and the means to
deliver it!
(We're, "full-service", young, stupid, pukes!!)

"Bigger rocks"???
Ha, ha, ha!
We've got "artillery"!

"Kid wars"!?
Luckily, this incident ended that!!

We have one of our "toys" loaded and ready to go.
(At this point: we had "launched", 100's of these "toys" - our aim was good!)
"On my command" - "Fire"!
Vooom!!
Away it goes!!
(It's not a "dud"!)
Splash! - almost a direct hit! - about, 6 inches to a foot away from our
"assailant's" right, foot.
However, I don't think "splash" is quite the pertinent, description.
"BIG SPLASH"!!!! - is more, what we saw!
Twice as high as that person!
He is very surprised!!!
He falls off of our little, "stepping-stone", path!
(Don't worry - it's Summer - the river is only, about 6 to 8 inches deep -
at that spot!)
He was "perturbed" before - now he's REALLY, mad!

We beat a hasty, retreat!
(OK, not a "retreat" - a "strategical", advance to the rear!)
He's in "hot" pursuit!! (luckily, we had a "head-start"!)
