Wind tunnel

Anyone ever built their own wind tunnel? Just need to ask some questions. Any feedback appreciated.

Very helpful. Thanks. As I thought, another useless forum.

Start with an enclosed box. Put a fan at one end. Voila. Small scale wind tunnel.

Do you need something bigger? Try these guys:

Or these guys: http://www.nasa.gov/centers/langley/...ndtunnels.html

no sense of humor?

you asked if anybody has built one. You got no answers so I suspect nobody here has built one. There are a lot of intelligent people here though including a couple engineers. If you explain what you are looking for, somebody might be able to help. As it stands, nobody knows what you are looking for.

Sense of humor? Common sense. Yes, I built three wind tunnels in my time, the most recent of which I used to design the F-22 Raptor which I built in my garage using a plans that Norm featured on the New Yankee Workshop. I had to move the wind tunnel last week so that I could perform open heart surgery on my neighbor using my new Fein Multimaster and a simple plumbing diagram. If I get time today I'm going to grab my tool box and try to restore democracy in a small African nation. Yep, all DIY task.

Wind tunnel.

well, realistically, a wind tunnel is not difficult to build. It depends what the intent is that makes a difference. As Leah said; a shoe box with a fan in one end (and an opening on the other) is a wind tunnel. It's crude but it's a wind tunnel.

You can make any improvements you want from that starting point.

but about that F22 engineering thing. I'm thinking somebody in Congress would like to have a talk with you.

- What can't wireless G build? Nothing.

- What can't Norm build in his workshop? Nothing.

- What can't the Fein Multimaster do? Nothing.

- What can't I do.... make a good joke out of this......

I'm sorry, this is a most helpful and useful forum for people who come in and ask intelligent questions and are willing to spend more than ten seconds at the keyboard and typing a description of what the problem is or what they are attempting to create/repair! Your question is vague since you offer no explanation of what you want to do with it or how large you need it to be!
So, if you'd like to join in this fascinating conversation and tell us what you actually need to accomplish, perhaps we can all have some fun helping.

How do you find those Fein tools compared to Dremel? Also does the blood cause any issues with the motor, I know they're not really rated for wet area, but guess as long as none gets into the motor you're fine.

As far as serious answer, you could probably fairly easily build your own, if you want a small one. Like, how big do you need this exactly?

If it's a small one that sits on a desk you could probably just use some ductwork in a oval shape, one of the long ends would be clear plastic (maybe cut up some plastic bottles) and the other end would be a booster fan. You could also add a tray of some sort to burn insense if you need smoke.

If you want something big to like, test a car in, that's a bit more serious. Start by checking with your hydro company to see if 3 phase power is available in your area.

Those morons irritate me. They come and ask a generic question without any indication of intent or size or purpose of the subject they are asking about, then they get pissed and declare this forum useless when someone tries to have a little fun. You have to wonder how the hell they get through life on a daily basis being such rectal orifices.

Wasn't "Archimedesclaw" a mythical weapon that no one has ever been able to prove even existed? Maybe this whole thread is just a mirage.

Wind tunnel

We used to use a wind tunnel to test siding installations.
(We're very careful)
Got it up to 150 mph - wind tunnel won!
Since this is a "full-featured" "DIY" site -
We've got to bid a job at Alpha Centauri (don't ask, it's a little "out of our
normal stomping grounds").
So what I need, is plans/specs for a good "faster than light"/ hyper drive.
You know - something we can pick up all the required parts at the local
"Big Box, Apron/Vest, Hardware store" (we're on a budget - money IS a
factor!).
And, while we're at it - the prospect of being subjected to the "G" force,
stress entailed to get out the Earth's gravitational pull is unacceptable/
untenable - we're old "forts" - can't handle stress, like we used to.
So, while you good people are instructing someone to build a wind tunnel and, a modestly priced "hyper-drive" - I'm sure you'll have the expertise
to give me some "DIY" help on constructing an "Anti-gravitational" device -
so we can "float", gracefully out of the Earth's atmosphere; before we
engage the "hyper-drive"! (10 to 20 times the "speed of light" should be
adequate - keep the costs down!).
And, (this should be simple - with all the knowledge, expertise, and experience of the people here) - how do I solve global warming/cooling,
starvation, disease, war, pestilence, famine - and, I need the "Keys to
Universe" and the winning Lottery numbers!
I'll expect pertinent, concise, and germane answers within, say - an hour!
Should be no problem!! (I've got "Archimedes Claw" and I might use it!)
(consult the manual - not responsible for unintended rashes, swelling,
dismemberment, untimely demise, destruction of property, etc. - Do Not
attempt this at home!!)
I hope this wasn't too much to ask!

Regards!
rossfingal

(P.S. - I have a problem in my house - how do I solve it!?!)

Oh heck, that's an easy one! Just grab your doohickey and screw the thingy to it and you're all set!
