So after, regrettably, responding somewhat harshly to MichealTP here:

How to create angled cement floor in crawlspace

I started thinking about what made me irritated and I decided to step over here and explain.

The way I see it, there are 4 types of people who post here. I list them in order of highest respect to most detestable below.

1) Joe HomeOwner; This poster owns his or her home for the long haul and whether through financial stress or the feeling of pride that comes with a job well done, seeks advice here. You have my unlimited respect and I will offer any assistance I can.

2) Builder Jim: This guy does the job right at a reasonable price, providing a good product for the customer and a reasonable profit for himself. He or she may be a Master Builder or Jack-Of-All-Trades but he is motivated by more than pure profit. The desire to create something good and lasting while earning a living for himself and his family. If he has to cut corners, he lets the customer make that decision with as much information as he/she can provide.

3) The Lead Carpenter: This guy wants to do the job right, but because the company he works for is profit driven, his hands are tied by his supervisor, boss or company policy. Learn quick and move on.

4) Joe HomeSeller and RealEstateAgents: They're flipping it, selling it, or trying to get out, and the Home Inspector, Real Estate Agent, Prospective Buyer noticed some flaw. They want to fix it quick and dirty and move on. Selling a Pig-in-a-Poke

5) The Scam Artist: Get in, get out and pocket as much as you can. Instant Karmas gonna' get ya'. I hope

Here ends my rant.

Can I add my vent here too?

Mine can be summed up in one word.

WHY!

I think the thread you linked is an exception, your OP continued with his idea even after you explained why it wouldn't work. A lot of time, however, I see a response with just "No", or "Don't do it", with no reason given. When I'm told "No", I wanna know why. I think a lot of arguments could be averted if people would take an extra minute and explain WHY something is a bad idea or won't work.

WHY you shouldn't attach wood to concrete.
Why you shouldn't cut that joist.
WHY you shouldn't have drywall in a shower.
Etc. etc.

.

I always want to know how and why, too.

If I understand how something works --only then can I figure out how to best use that object.

Excellent point there,Blondsense-- The ability to teach others is a rare and valuable skill----often the best craftsmen can not teach others their trade.

Yep, we have a great bunch of guys here helping.
I know I'd have had a real hard time building this place if all I had for information resources was the library.
What kills me is these idiots who come in, ask VERY basic questions, then get mouthy when someone chides them for it.
We're ALL (actual helping members) spending OUR time AND $$$!, (those of us who pay for internet) to offer FREE help!
Would it kill them to be polite? Would it kill them to use a spell-checker?
*someone shoot me now....*

I'm willing to give reasons until it begins to sound like a conversation with my toddler nephew. 'why, Tia Leah? WHY?'
For the record, I no longer try to explain:

- why you should NOT do unpermitted/illegal/unsafe home improvements. If you aren't willing to listen, then on your own head be it.

- why you can't just refuse to pay your contractor.

- why you should have a contract even if your contractor is your father/brother in law/best friend.

- why you need primer.

- why you need to remedy the cause of water damage, not just fix it.

- why you should google things yourself or use the 'search' function on this site.

- why you should listen to the pros.

- why you shouldn't plant bamboo.

- why doing it right the first time can save you money over doing a quick-fix.

- why it is worth buying/renting the right tool for the right job.

- why I am still sitting at the tire place.....

Probably because of the 'running' type of bamboo. It IS a grass, and spreads just like our lawns.

Bamboo has three growth spurts each year. The first is in April and May. Within a month or two, the new shoots have grown into full-sized culms (stems). In June and July, after the new shoots are in full leaf, the older culms begin to drop their leaves and then grow a new set. In late summer, the grove extends its rhizomes (horizontal root stem), which is how running bamboo spreads.

In the first few years, a new planting of running bamboo spreads slowly, but then their growth picks up. And in each additional year, the new culms grow taller and larger in diameter. The culms in the middle of a grove grow larger than the ones on the perimeter.

That's fine and dandy and I usually don't mind explaining WHY. But after you have done this for ten years as some of us have, and you know there is an excellent SEARCH mechanism here, and you keep getting the same questions over and over and over and over and over again, then you will change your tune.

I like to treat most everyone like a personal customer of mine and I like to see the threads personalized from a "WHY" standpoint. But when someone comes along with ridiculous crap-like ideas they got from their canary or their talking dog and start off not listening to reason and really want nothing more than our blessing to go ahead and crap in their own lunch box then I get a little raspy. A few come to argue, doesn't matter how much "WHY" you offer them they are going to argue about it.

A few are here only to stir the pot, we saw this with IceT recently and as I predicted he "wouldn't last they never do" and now he is gone as predicted. He must have lost interest when he was proven wrong and nothing more than a troublemaker.

Others that come to disrupt lurk for a short time and then they tend to pick-on and call-out those of us that they perceive to be "The Big Dogs" of a trade or subject. They also don't last but while they are here they piss me off.

Some come with one-word questions. How the hell are you supposed to deal with those abbreviated simpletons? How I ask you, HOW? Why would I want to spend my time offering reams of "WHYs" when they haven't contributed much of anything. Hell an orgasm lasts longer than some of the posters that come here.

Then there is the "just plain stupid" kind of comments. They make you wonder how on earth those people make it through a day without a handler to help them cross over every crack in the sidewalk. We all know you just can't fix stupid.

So after ten years of all this experiencing-life on the Internet a person grows a little weary of the repetition of typing "WHY".

Last and certainly not least (an most appreciated) are the majority of posters that come here with serious questions and offering details and explanations and their own WHYs. Those folks are always a pleasure to deal with and I often come away feeling good about our meeting and our conversation. Hell...some of them even own a camera and know how to use it. Wish I could say the same about me.

Okay, this may have turned into a rant - not really sure.

EDIT: One more thing! This endeavor serves as therapy for me and as most know: It Doesn't Pay very Well.

OK, this time I am done.

__________________________________________________ _____
Well no I'm not!!!! I'll be damned if it didn't just happen again! So let me also add there are also those posters that are just plain over-sensitive and come here wanting to be offended by every little comment that is made. Those are the real pissers.
Okay, now I'm done, now you guys can ban me. My wife and son would love that anyway.

Thanks for not crucifying me guys. After posting, I thought I might have said to much.

After thinking on it some more, I think I was wrong to try and pigeonhole some of our posters into some type of classification system. Things are rarely that black and white.

Probably, more accurately, it is the motivation behind each question that concerns me.

Anyway, thanks again for letting me think it through out-loud. I was just trying to understand what irritated me .
