Who knows what this is?

First off... Love the new look of the site. Second, sorry I have been away for so long and am now back asking for help, but I am sure many of you know how busy life can be these days.

But here is my query:

I dug this up in Northwest Florida along the Spanish Trail, but believe it to be somewhat recent. I think this because a part of it seems to have somewhat fine machine threads. It is about 30" long and looks like it may be able to extend to about 48" long. As you can see it has what appears to be a pivot point mid-way and has a cog attached to the end. The metal seems old and of low quality, though it has survived in the sand I dug it up from until now. I suspect that the parts near it in the one photo may be part of what it was once attached to. If the pics are not too clear, the squared end seems to be able to extend the length of the total tool.

Thanks in advance,
Brett

First guess would be torque wrench. But that looks like a roller chain sprocket on the end.

I agree. Something that either adjusted another sprocket, or attached to a chain. One person I showed it to thought maybe even an old come-along. Another said farming implement, while another said an adjustment for cannon. I just thought it was an interesting piece and knew that there are many knowledgeable people on this site.

Looks like a chain tensioner. The shaft was probably spring loaded to hold a chain tight.

Imagine a conveyor chain. The chain drive is on one end and at the other end where it wraps around and comes back you have this spring loaded device to hold the chain tight.
