Where can I find good contractor and building material suppliers?

I was wondering if anyone knows of a good resource to find contractors? I have been looking online and all I have seen are sites where you have to describe the job then wait to get called from a contractor or if I find a directory type of site there is a limited number of contractors in my area, but I know there are many more. I am trying to build my first house and I was planning on hiring all the contractors so I need a good resource to find them. Something with reviews and article would also be very beneficial, please let me know if anyone knows of a good place to look.

Denniis....You're asking a question that NO ONE can possibly answer. First off...where are you located? Second...with your location, there's a slim chance that fishing here will yield results. Suppliers...hit the phone book. When I built my house, for the couple of things I subbed out...I got the lead from my supplier. If you don't have the wherewithal look beyond the internet for your needs, you have a lot of work to do before you jump into a project of this scope...

That said...if you want to build it yourself...then we're here for ya.....

Best of luck to you...

Rippy pretty much took the words from my mouth.

Moving this to off-topic since it isn't in keeping with a DIY website.

My 2 Cents: The Best Contractors come by reliable word of mouth.

Local lumberyards usually have a short list of reliable contractors, and as suggested, check with friends, relatives, coworkers, etc.

Beware of lead services like Servicemagic, etc. They charge the contractors for leads and you'll pay that in the end. Best place to start is local lumberyard or even your banker.
