what's up with people saying "heighth"?!

Instead of a young lady saying, "He's my husband" or "He's my son's father" etc. Now I hear (mostly on tv shows for ages 13 to 22? or sometimes out in public) young ladies say, "He my baby daddy". I can't say that the ignorance of it really annoys me, I think it's kind of funny and it's fun to say. But, you have to say the 'baby daddy' part faster than the 'He my' part . Okay, it's annoying. How her baby daddy baby gonna learn proper English dat way?

"Ye Olde Coffee Shoppe"

People often pronounce the first word of the above phrase as "yee".

In fact, it should be pronounced exactly the same as "The".

That's cuz the "Y" in "Ye Olde Coffee Shoppe" is supposed to be the letter "Thorn" which is printed " " in lower case and " " in upper case.

In Medieval times the bar in would be sloping upward and to the left and the semicircle would be open at the top to make a "Y"-ish shape (kinda).

(Aside: The shapes of letters was pretty much a matter of personal preference before Gutenburg, who's moveable type standardized the way we shape letters even today. It would take another several hundred years until the first dictionaries were printed before the spelling of words became standardized too. Before Gutenburg, how you spelled a word and how you shaped the letters depended entirely on who taught you to read and write, and it was up to the intended reader to figure out what you meant to say.)

Since the written letter " " was shaped somewhat like a Y, printed text uses the letter "Y" to represent it, and so people think that the Medieval English woulda pronounced it "Yee Olde Coffee Shoppe". They didn't. Even 700 years ago, it still woulda been pronounced "The Olde Coffee Shoppe" (if they had olde coffee shoppes back then).

You don't take a roast out of the freezer to 'unthaw'. You take it out to 'thaw'. When it's in the freezer, it's already un-thawed.......frozen.

If I go to a store to buy a water heater, do I have to specify that I want a 'hot-water heater'? Does anyone ever go there to buy a 'cold-water heater' or 'luke-warm-water heater'?

It took me years to correct my sister in law on thaw, unthaw. Still working on hot water heater. I always ask her were her cold water heat is.

Even though I notice it when someone else says 'hot' water heater, I still say it myself most of the time.

Here's something that's fairly annoying. You're sitting in the dentist's chair with your mouth open and the dentist has a tool and 2 of his fingers in there, plus that little suction tube and he asks you a question that can't be answered with a nod, yes or no.

How about when you're sitting in a room at the doctor's office feeling like crap and the doctor walks in (1/2 hour later ) and says, "What seems to be the problem?" If I knew the answer to that question, I wouldn't be sitting there.

what's up with people saying "heighth"?!

Since a spammer brought this thread back to the top, I have something to add....

Being a patriotic person, I think it's great that the neighbors celebrate the 4th of July. But it's 1:37 a.m. (officially the 5th of July), I have to get up for work at 6:30, and they're still setting off fireworks.

I wouldn't think of calling the police, but would it be rude of me to drive up next to their house, in their driveway at 6:30 and lay on the horn when they're trying to sleep? Nah, I couldn't do that either. But the temptation is there...

In the category of do as I say, not as I do, I had a similar experience about 30 years ago. The parents were on vacation, so the neighbor kids had a 4th of July party, and the fireworks went until about 2:00 in the morning. I might have been able to write it off as kids being kids, except that I had to leave for work at about 6:30 the next morning. I went out about midnight, but discovered that the party had grown significantly, and the booze was going down as fast as the fireworks were going up, so since I was sure that there was no practical way for me to get everyone's attention, decided to just throw a pillow over my head, and chalk it up as a once a year event. Next morning, I was so exhausted that I didn't notice the VW beetle someone had left parked across the end of my driveway, but did notice it after I bumped it a little bit, so I left a note on the windshield, letting them know that I had bumped it, and went to work. Got home that night with a very frantic teenager waiting for me. Apparently, being in my 3/4 ton pickup, I hadn't felt the bump until I had pushed it across the road, where the tires on the opposite side of the car stopped at the berm of our gravel road, and I had actually crumpled the car to the point that it was only about half of its' original width, and the floor board was halfway to the roof. Not a pretty sight once I had a chance to look at it. Anyway, the kid was frantic over the fact that he had just bought it, against his parents approval, had no insurance, no registration, and he pleaded with me not to call the police. Naturally, I felt bad about it, and told him that I really thought we should report it, but he insisted that he was going to be in trouble all the way around, so I obliged.

Dude, I hope there weren't any unsolved hit-and-run accidents that day along your route...
