Website Censorship

The problem I have with the bill is that it would create a Big Brother - giving the government right to tell your service provider which websites should and should not be accessible without anyone really knowing. . . it would also lead to an environment in which forum admins (who mostly volunteer time and money) come under legal fire for content - bringing an end to this as a tech-age social network.

Since I spend a lot of my time researching government dirt - I believe that they'd simply lean on SOPA to make their dirt less accessible to the public.

I was surprised that it had a variety of support (cosponsors) - it's quite a bi-partisan bill. Odd that this is what they come together over.

What it really shows is that these people are easily bought out by Hollywood lobbyists.

I run a forum just for the enjoyment. If this passes, I probably will quit. The legal problems would be too much. To be on the safe side, all posts would have to be mod approved before posted. That would be a nightmare for admins.

Yes - most people do.

This SOPA reminds me of the Puritans from history in Europe - wanting strict control and constant oversight. . . it didnt' end well for them and their values didn't stick because it alienated everyone involved.

This is now scheduled to come up for a vote in January.
I run a forum and am a mod on several others. This could destroy them. If a poster copies and pastes a copyrighted item, the forum owner could be fined and the forum shut down. The only alternative would be for someone to read and approve every post before it's posted. That would be impossible on many forums. If you have ever googled to ask a question, you have probably used a forum. This Sopa/Pippa bill would end many of them.

I don't think the public realizes that the SOPA bill could kill all on-line forums including this one.

Thanks for posting that Rusty. I see Gibson Guitar Co. (#123) is on there. After what they have been through with the govt., you'd think they would stay away from crap like this. Which makes me think that maybe some of these companies were 'strongly encouraged' to sign it.

Just my 2˘
