Want or Need?
I'm listening to the Allen Hunt show on AM radio. He's talking about a study that says because of the economy, 4 out of 5 people say they are cutting back on their spending.
Of all the conveniences you have, which ones do you think you NEED? Which ones could you give up?
Television (basic)
Cable/Satelite
A second car
Computer
Air conditioning
Microwave
ipod (mp3)
Cell phone
Home phone
Etc.

Want or Need?
I don't have an mp3 player or air conditioning, so those could go pretty easily. We've been living without a second car for a couple weeks, since my wife is a professional mom, and we've done without a home phone before. We'd need either a home phone or a cell phone, so cells would be easier.
As far as TV, cable, and computer, I'd really have to be in dire straights, especially computer (we're one of those families that pays bills and checks balances and such on line).

Want or Need?
As far as I know, we could live without a second car. They're both paid-off, so the only purpose for it would be to lower the cost of insurance. We'd have to lose the car though, we use the minivan to haul a lot of stuff.
State licensing requires me to have a home phone for my business, or I'd happily to get rid of that. The cell phone is much cheaper anyway, $35 a month.
If I had some Dora the Explorer DVD's ( LOL), I wouldn't mind getting rid of satellite or at least dropping the useless (IMO) movie channels and other extra's. But, everyone else enjoys it so....
As far as the A/C goes, I'll compromise there. I'll promise to leave it off September through May, but I need it the rest of the year. That seems more than fair. LOL

Not me. Then I would have to use the stove or oven. And that would take away from my computer time. LOL

Television (basic) Luxury I could live without if I needed to - Netflix is cheaper
Cable/Satelite See above
A second car I'll give up my second, but not my third through fifth
Computer Do what now? How would I DIYChat?
Air conditioning Yes, I'd give this up - but I wouldn't work as hard
Microwave Sure, no problem I'd rather live without a microwave than a garbage disposal.
ipod (mp3) Ipod = iphone and I give it to you when you pry it out of my cold dead hand
Cell phone See above
Home phone Sure, I don't have one
Etc.

When I was a kid, we went without a water heater in our house for over a year. Not sure why. My mom heated water on the stove for baths and dishes.
Aaahhh, the good ole' days! LOL

Television (basic) - basic is with rabbit ears so, that would be free.
Cable/Satelite - would give it up no prob.
A second car - doable, but inconvenient for sure since they're both paid for.
Computer - couldn't do it, my job depends on it.
Air conditioning - I would fight to keep this for my baby boy's comfort.
Microwave - Doable, don't use it much anyways.
ipod (mp3) - no prob
Cell phone - please take it!
Home phone - I would keep this, it's cheaper than my cell phone, and I need one of them.
Eating out - cut that one out.
Reno's - put them on hold.
It would be tough though, for sure.

.....
My mom brings it up once in a while. We just laugh about it now. She said one day she heard a loud scream coming from the bathroom. One of us kids sat down too fast in the cold water. Someone didn't wait for her to add the water heated on the stove. LOL.
I guess a water heater is one convenience nobody would give up.
That's a good question to add to this thread: If you had to give up either your computer or your water heater, which one would it be?

Want or Need?
We've cut our spending a lot. Basically just stopped feeding the kids. They now scavenge for berries!
Just kidding. We've stopped eating out, which saves us a lot. Cut back on extracurricular activities for everybody. Last year for the first time in my life I had a lawn service. Not this year. Back to cutting my own grass

Want or Need?
Television (basic) - I could live without it, but would desperately try to keep it.
Cable/Satelite - I could watch movies all day on DVD...so if forced I would get rid of it.
A second car - my motorcycle? only if an emergency
Computer - No friggin way
Air conditioning - I live in alaska. My blanket is my air conditioner
Microwave - yea...I actually cook stuff.
ipod (mp3) - My kids use it. I could get rid of it
Cell phone - then I lose money...no way.
Home phone - it's so cheap, why would I want to lose my land line in case the cell goes out. to save $3.00?
Etc. - no...I like my Ect....
