USS Midway

The USS Midway was named after the 1942 WW2 Naval Battle
That Battle was so important that the US Navy almost immediately
came to the realization that they should name a Navy ship 'Midway'
The present USS Midway is actually the third ship with that name.
The first USS Midway was an Auxiliary ship.
The Navy got a lot of flack for not using a fighting name for a fighting ship.
So the second ship with that name was a small Aircraft Carrier that under a name change to USS Saint Lo
was the first large ship lost to a kamikaze attack.
The Navy still got flack so they named the new largest Carrier built during WW2 the 'USS Midway' although by the time it was completed the war ended in 1945. The 1945 'Midway' did not have the angled Flight Deck, that was added later.

I do not drink and have no desire to go across any borders I would really like to see a carrier up close sometime. We are planning on doing the southern part of the Cal. trip next spring, so maybe then( unless they are all deployed to Korea)

You won't see that carrier going anywhere....it's a museum now....

As for North Korea? The only way your going to see a bunch of Americans over there is for clean up.....picking the glass up off the ground....

USS Midway

I was on that San Diego 'Midway' tour in 2010. It was great.
I was expecting to go rushing around the ship with a whole passel of tourists trying to keep up with some teenage tour guide that did not really know that much about the ship, so in the end I would not see that much, but at least I would have a better appreciation about what it was like.
.....Boy was I surprised.
.....First the tours were self guided. Which means you could wander around most decks but rather than having a lot of signs explaining things every visitor was issued a headset that had a proximity detector that as you neared an area of interest a canned message would play explaining what went on there plus some historical notes.
.....Second there were a number of retired Navy volunteers around the ship that would answer individual questions and share their anecdotes.
There is so much to see that I ran out of time so I did not get to the Island on the Flight deck. I'm looking forward to the next visit.

All you had to do is pop across the bay to Alameda (Oakland).
The Hornet (CV12) is there. Essex Class carrier.

Bob, the Coral Sea was supposed to be CVA 42 but Roosevelt died and they changed the name to Franklin D. Roosevelt CVA 42.

It is hard for me to think they are scrapping the Enterprise soon. That was commissioned just after I got out or around that time. Time flys.

The A10 is a good weapon....the military is still debating if to refurbish them or make a new version.....many times brute force simplicity wins out.....

As for the Enterprise.....

Quote:
USS Enterprise (CVN-65), formerly CVA(N)-65 a retired US Navy aircraft carrier. She was the world's first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier and the eighth United States naval vessel to bear the name. Like her predecessor of World War II fame, she is nicknamed "Big E". At 1,123 ft (342 m),[3][4] she is the longest naval vessel in the world. Her 93,284 long tons (94,781 t)[2] displacement ranks her as the 11th-heaviest supercarrier, after the 10 carriers of the Nimitz class. Enterprise had a crew of some 4,600 people.[7]
The only ship of her class, Enterprise is the third oldest commissioned vessel in the United States Navy after the wooden-hulled USS Constitution and the USS Pueblo, which is currently being held by North Korea but remains an actively commissioned US Naval ship. She was originally scheduled for decommissioning in 2014 or 2015, depending on the life of her reactors and completion of her replacement, USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN-78).[10] But the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2010 slated the ship's retirement for 2013, when she would have served for 51 consecutive years, longer than any other U.S. aircraft carrier.[11]

If it was the 72-84 era, they may not have been training flights. The A10 final assembly was in Hagerstown, so they might have been the shakedown and acceptance test flights.
