USS Midway

Our scout pack did the overnight stay at the USS Midway last night. Basically, they let up to 200 people take part in a program that starts about 4:30pm and ends at 9am the next morning which includes sleeping in the enlisted births on the ship. It's a great experience on several levels.

Your on an aircraft carrier that was built in 1945 and has as significant place in history....

The first V2 missile launch from a ship.

The first cold water air operations (prior to that, all air operations had been done in tropical waters.

The Midway evacuated the the people from Vietnam when it fell.

The Midway evacuated people from an Island when the inactive volcano decided to go active.

Except for the sleeping arrangements, it was a great experience. I now have a new found respect for what enlisted sailors endure while at sea.

Here are a few photos...

What a great experience for the boys (and Dad) I wouldn't have slept all night- I'd been exploring every inch.
Funny, I just watched a National Geographic show today on the Ronald Reagan carrier. It has 2 nuclear plants for power. Only refueling it needs is jet fuel
BTW I want copies of your classified pictures that you didn't post :jester:

Amazing experience for everyone. That man in the 5 picture seems to have their full attention so the kids probably learned something.

I don't mean to be rude, after all you were there, but that person in the 5th pic with the kids sitting down sure looks male

When I was in the 4th grade, I lived in Seattle. It was Sea Fair Week so Dad took me and my older brothers down to the wharf to see the navy ships. I can remember being below deck in a hanger gawking at a jet. I turned to say something to dad but no one was there- dad and my brothers had moved on to another exhibit:eek:
That ship suddenly became huge! It took awhile and a little help from some navy personel- but I was finaly united with my family :)

I also remember the Mighty Mo at Bremerton WA. I stood were the WW2 Japeneze surrender took place

Not rude.....just a fact....yea....'she' is a bit rough looking....and given the 'tone' of it's voice.....there is a good chance 'she' used to be a 'he'.

Regardless....when she/he asked questions....my kids answered most of them....in fact, when my David went into a 5 min dissertation as to why the ships screws turned in opposite directions, I got a few comments from the other dads "Yep, he is going to be an engineer".

Proud popa here...

Dawg, the Midway was #41 I was on the Aircraft carrier Franklin D. Roosevelt CVA 42, I was in arresting gear and was the hook runner on the flight deck. I had to make sure the plane's tail hook was disengaged from the cable. It got pretty hairy up there at times, but always interesting.

Nice pictures Ddawg. What a wonderful experience for your sons. They're lucky to have such a great dad.

Speaking of Phantoms -
Many years ago, my brother took a vacation to Europe -
The flight did a stop-over in Iceland.
There, sitting on the tarmac were, F 4 II - Phantoms - US markings.
(Don't know if they were "E", "F", "G", "H"?)
He said it was nice to see a little bit of home; so far away!
NATO!
"RF"
(I just got "carded" for beer!) :)

Just a quick addition.....I uploaded a couple of pics I took with my phone....

Before we went on board, we had a late lunch at the Kansas City BBQ.....same bar they shot the bar scenes in Top Gun....it's only a couple blocks away....

And to be honest....the food was good...'sort' of pricey...but the quality matched....I had the pulled pork sandwich...and another dad and I split a pitcher of beer (we weren't driving)....the beer was very good...local brew...

My boys had no idea what Top Gun was...but now want to see it....
