Urine Drug Screen too dilute - wow my friend is dumb.

So, my friend, had two drug test this week. The first was a random urine screen required by her work. The test was flagged for retesting because her urine was too dilute - she considers 'staying hydrated' her second job. So she had to do another. No big whoop. She doesn't do drugs. No drama.

She then complained that she had to drink a bunch of root beer and lemonade before her second drug screen. Puzzled by this statement, DH asked her, "why?". Her response, "because I couldn't drink any water, or my urine would be too dilute."

I'm just as puzzled as her husband. But my wife would agree with her. She hardly ever drinks anything but water.

Are drug tests commonplace in America? (I'm guessing from other posts that that's where most people here are).

What job was this for?

Sorry for being off topic, I'm from the UK and I've never heard of anyone having to have a drug test as part of a job.

It's not un-common for people with sensitive jobs (transportation, hospital work, etc). Lots of places require UAs on hiring.

You could have suggested she eat a whole bunch of Poppy Seed Muffins, in order to "undilute" her blood. I'm sure that would have worked nicely.

Lots of manufacturing plants had random testing too.

Wonder what effect this had on our manufacturing base.

I worked for two major manufacturing companies in the U.S. before retiring, now I'm contracted to another major manufacturer. Random drug testing has been a way of life for me since back in the mid-70's. NO- I have never had a government or government associated job, and certainly not a sensitive job, unless you count the facility I work at now which makes toilet tissue.

WHOOO! HI-LARIOUS. Even after we explained that the thing that makes root beer liquid is WATER she still seemed iffy.

I thought for sure she was trying some stoner 'cleanse'.

I work in the mining industry in Southern WV and we get drugtested monthly. Some are from the company and some are from the Mine Safety and Health Administration. What a pain. I had a real close call on one not to long ago. They said I tested positive for opiates on the retest it was determined to be a false positive. It only cost me 2 weeks of work and pay.

You should have gone to your union steward and filed a Grievence for back pay.

That's awful. They should certainly have to pay you the money you would have earned.

I have quite an issue with the idea of drug testing. Not only is it an invasion of privacy (i.e if you're on the ball and proficient at your job, does it really matter what you do in your own time, and is it any of your companies business what you do?) but the fact that it is so easy to gain a false positive makes the system highly unfair also.
