Upgrade 92sq ft plywood to cement board- $670 too high?

I wanted to change from plywood to cement board for a 92sq ft tiled kitchen area. The contractor quoted a difference in price of $670 for labor and materials. That seems very high? Is it, in your experience too costly?

Prices vary too widely to really answer your question. Also, cement board offers no structural support. What do you have on the floor now?

It would be cement board on the underfloor plywood, rather than plywood on plywood.

If you have the typical 3/4" subfloor, CBU on that would not be sufficient for ceramic tile.
