Ever watch a teen use her thumbs to text her friends? Mine can probably type as quickly as some can speak

We're going to have a whole generation of high school kids with carpal tunnel syndrome from doing all that texting. They'll call it carpal texting syndrome.

That's why we downsize to laptops for portability, from the desktop. Phones are for calls/talking.

Yeah, I can do it on the "slider" phones with the pull out keyboard, but the touchscreen typing is just out of the question for me! I don't see how people can do it!

My blackberry has the full qwerty keyboard. I need it for biz though not just personal. I opted out of the touch screen cuz I thought the grease fingerprints would drive me crazy, but they are visible regardless

I call them electronic cockroaches. They are seen everywhere including next to salads in restaurants. They multiply and seem impossible to kill even by imposing hefty fines for use when driving or in theaters. In numbers and set to vibrate they sound like a terrarium full of Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches.
Remember the days when you could go to lunch or dinner and if splurging actually sit and have a discussion without interruptions? Have thinks really gotten so urgent we cannot make it through a movie or play without the darn things vibrating or worse? I have had people infuriated (and twitching from withdrawal symptoms) when I insist they turn theirs all the way off during such things.
I am usually not far from my laptop since I need the software on it for things. It is heavy though. I am adjusting to the smartphone thing and am surprised at the low percentage of use is actually for phone calls. And my touchscreen seems unusually temp sensitive. Forget it if it gets a thin film of moisture on it.
It is hard for me to believe but a subsidiary of a company I worked for in the 70s had working, pattern recognition based, voice recognition and response technology. You had to decide whether you wanted it to learn lots of words uttered by one or two voices or a few words but many voices. It seems like that technology should be more adapted than it is.
Things are changing though and the shift is to hardware orientation rather than software. So far people seem to rebel against bloatware on their pads and smartphones. I actually remember the days when computer software companies used to strive for such things. Now, if the memory and disc space is there, they seem compelled to use it all!
These Android/iPad/Windows tablet and smartphone things will all get better. Just saw a five position Samsung touchscreen technology pad thing for $150, with fast processor, Gingerbread, HD cameras front and back, 8" screen, etc. Chinese built of course but they all are. Some of the docks that allow pads to fit into real keyboards are intriguing.
As stated by others, watching teens work the texting functions is amazing. Sadly, an entire generation or two is growing up not knowing how to put complete sentences together though. Maybe it does not matter and we all just shift in the way we communicate. I used to shock colleagues at one place I worked by walking to their offices---sometimes two or three doors away---to ask or answer question rather than eMail. Absolute technology heresy of course!
Of course my favorite pet peeve is people who add a bragging tagline about the technology they are using. Like anyone cares! Or it will be the hot technology for more than about 15 seconds.

Most phones "get to know you". I think both androids and iPhones do. Typing was awful on my iphone for the first month, but then it got a lot better.

LOL
Sent from my combination George Forman Grill, Eureka Full Powered Vacuum, and Android Gingerbread Tablet that Cannot Make Phone Calls Unless I use Skype. Came with Angry Birds though. So you know as I do hair and nails driving when I have to do so? It is all so marvelous.
