Total users online 587 riiiiiiiight!

Ever notice how this site always says there are hundred of users online viewing threads, but then you start looking at the different forums and the last time somone posted was 3 days ago? I predict 8 views and 1 response to this post in 3 days......

Lots of people hang out and just read.

Out of aprox. 600 users, you'd get maybe 30 members (5%)
And not all of those (registered) members are participatory (actively posting) members

You've got to remember that the search bots counts towards that number. Not just this site, but any site running vBulletin. There can be hundreds of search bots from various search engines snooping around at a time.

I know I cruised the site for about a month before I joined and posted.

This is very true. A lot of the guests that show up are search bots.

Here's another secret. Nathan's got his sites set to not remove an inactive user from that list for a very long time. That artifically jacks up the number of users online since many of them have left hours and hours earlier.

I think a lot of people out there just search through the forums for the little bit of help they need. A lot of times questions have already been answered.

Well, I wouldn't call this a secret... anyone who looks at the "who's online" area can see this. I don't block access to that area.

DIYchatroom and ContractorTalk.com have a setting of 100 minutes.

This is just to show who has been on recently not to show who clicked on something in the last 5 seconds.

Hey, calm down ol' buddy. Five seconds would be way too short. One-hundred minutes is very long when compared to most boards. Twenty to 30 minutes seems to be the norm in my observation.

 Believe me... I'm not upset. It's a system that has worked well for me. For me, I like to see who has been on the site recently and therefore whose posts to look for.

I used to have another box that showed who has been on in the last 24 hours but that list got a little too long so I killed it.
