Tornado hits Joplin, Mo.

I know there are several posters on here from my area. A tornado has destroyed much of Joplin, Mo. It took out St John's hospital. It stayed on the ground all the way across Joplin.

They are expecting hundreds of fatalities. I live 60 miles from there and our fire dept went there.

Yes...watched on the news last nite and this morning. Terrible, terrible. I had to travel to Minneapolis/St Paul for a training seminar yesterday and the damage here is relatively minor (not trying to downplay it but compared to Joplin it's nothing). My sister lives in eastern WI and spent the night in their safe room. Not an investment I can laugh at. Their sirens went off several times. Bad, bad storms.

My sons & their wives live in Minneapolis. Lots of damage there - in a specific neighborhood or two - but like you say, it's absolutely nothing compared to Joplin.

89 confirmed dead and they just started the house to house at daybreak, a couple hours ago.

Please forgive what sounds like a crass question, but how is it that the death toll is so high? Was there no warning? Or was it so devastating that it killed people who had taken cover?

edit... Wow, I'm watching some video footage, shot from a helicopter. Maybe it's a miracle that there aren't thousands dead!

Ir was an EF4, second only to EF5 in intensity. It was "wrapped in rain" so it couldn't be seen by the naked eye. It tore up many buildings that were considered safe from tornados. It was a 3 vortex storm (3 funnels). They are picking up debris today almost 100 miles away. People here get complacent. We live in the middle of tornado alley, but the town I live in hasn't been hit since the 50's.

We had one touch down on the Eastern Shore of Maryland this week. We got a automated call from the city telling us to seek shelter. It missed town but the sky turned green. Creepy.

Boy, we never know.... it could be the next time we go through a traffic signal.

The Westboro Baptist Church plans to protest at the memorial aervice in Joplin today. They believe that God killed all those people as retribution for the US allowing homosexuals. They were refused service at a Joplin business last night and when one started mouthing off he ended up on the ER.
