Thoughts: There are four ways to produce wealth in our society.

I was thinking today about my future and what the term wealth really is to me, specifically material wealth. I think people generally have the wrong idea about it. My idea is that there are basically four ways to produce wealth in our society.
This is the list of them:

1) Working: This is the most used way of producing wealth, simply because you have to do it. There's no way around the fact that everybody money. Everybody already knows how this works, so nothing more need be said about it.

2) Investing: This is used a bit less often than working, but it's still a very common and well understood method of producing wealth. You give corporations money, they use it for business, and in a matter of years, they give you twice that amount of money back.

3) Creating Your Own Goods And Services, aka, Do It Yourself: This one is underused, which is unfortunate because using it can be very efficient and rewarding. Examples include fixing things around the house, self auto-care, mending clothes, gardening, building, etc.

4) Sharing: This is the most underused method of all. Most people only do it within their own families. However it is incredibly rewarding. To create a culture of sharing where none existed before requires social skills, confidence, initiative, and generosity. Say new neighbors move in next door so you go and greet them and make friends. You could then tell each other about your respective interests, skills, and special advantages, offer them a favor if the opportunity comes up, and on your way out the door mention, "if you need anything, just let me know." Now you have a new buddy that you'll be able to share assets with. Of course, the deeper the relationship and more generous you've been, the further this will take you. Oh, and it's worth mentioning that skills you learn from DIYing would make great assets when creating a culture of sharing.

Do you have any thoughts on this?

There are other kinds of wealth that you didn't mention.

Can you name or describe them?

I often use the bartering system and have a much higher feeling of accomplishment when I am able to trade something other than money

3 and 4 are really the same thing-- you're being your own boss, it's just that the mission statement is different. Number 3 would be self-employment, no matter the objective, and number 4 would be owning a business. If you have a small business, but you have to show up every day because your skills are an essential part of the business, that's essentially the same as being self-employed.

Anyway, sharing helps you do more without involving the government or big corporations, and that's why co-ops are becoming a little more popular.

People often complain about the large salaries that professional athletes make. What makes them worth all that money they may ask. The answer is simple, when people tune in to watch, they watch ads and buy the products that are advertized. Companies pay for advertizing (3 million for 30 seconds in this year's Superbowl) because they know they will get a return on their investment. Therefore, in spite of the enormous wages some of these athletes are paid, the wealth they produce eclipses that pay.

On the other hand you have pols and state employees like tenured state university professors that make ridiculous 6-figure salaries that produce nothing and are paid with your hard earned tax dollars.
