things found in your walls

during our inspection i found a clipping from either a comic book or boy's life from the 70's.

when we were redoing the walls in a place i lived in in college we found some papers from the 60's. tossed 'em back in and added one from the 90s.

what have you found?

10 sticks of decomposing dynamite, wrapped in old newspapers from the 40's. Police roped off the block. Fire dept took the dynamite to the park and burned it.

A home made gun, made out of wood and steel. Firing pin operated using a spring.

Haven't found too many exciting things, usually trash like an old coke or beer cans, but I always try to leave something. Often just pocket change for whomever does the next demo/remod in 20-30 years.

I was in Washington, PA at the time. Made the front page of the local paper, right beside the story/pic of Robert "Budd" Dwyer.

Some roofing tools, gum wrappers, empty beer cans - not that old
Newspapers from the 50's & at my last hosue even earlier
A 1918 sharpshooter rifle-missing the cartridge & bolt

RippySkippy 06-15-2009 08:46 AM

Found: One house had a sizable **** collection from the 50's...but the attic's heat and dry air made the pages like powder...if they didn't disintegrate, you could "read" it...but you better look once....most likely it wouldn't be around for a second glance...

The last house had a HUGE collection of Budweiser cans...it's obvious from the building quality it was from the crew assigned to this house....'nohter story...

To keep in the thread of leaving/finding stuff...

My wife and I left a several coins in our new house...and someone will have the "honor" of finding a set of un-circulated state quarters split up into 4 different locations with clues to the other 3...that should be interesting for them to find....guess they will have to determine the "worth" of locating the other sets...

We also put the current weekend newspaper in/on/under a cabinet in the kitchen/bath complete with all the adds showing car prices, local and international news....

Mold, rot, and roaches, mostly. Did find a framing hammer once...drywallers must have got there while the guy was at lunch.

Still looking for the buried treasure.......:whistling2:

Nothing in the walls yet, but an old owner used some folded up newspapers from the early 90s to fill a gap between the drywall and the bathroom fan probably in an attempt to reduce vibration. When I found it, I promptly replaced the newspaper with spray foam....

When a basement foundation wall was replaced, we found some mid 1950's newspapers in there... the oddest thing is, my house was built in 1948. Still can't figure this one out, as they were in the middle blocks themselves, no way they could have got put in there later...

Oh and when I pulled out the old sink/cabinet/medicine cabinet there was a collection of years worth of shaving razor blades in the wall, musta just been tossing them through the crack when finished, that was kind of gross...

Old School McDonald's wrappers/boxes. (Building was 1979)

When I demo'ed my main bathroom I found a matchbook advertising the 1940 World's Fair buried in the poured concrete floor. That's how we pinned down the year the house was built.

Also found a pile of razorblades in the wall behind the medicine cabinet.

Behind the vanity, we found a credit card in the name of the previous owner! Sadly, it was expired.

We found various crosses, coins, a closed out bankbook from the 50's. The bankbook had ~$47k when it was cashed out.
That's when we started punching holes in the wall looking for the stash..

when we moved in here, my son found about a dozen old coins up high scattered near the back of a bedroom closet shelf.
mercury dimes, buffalo nickles, a silver dollar and a real old 1865 penny! it was like finding a treasure for my son.
