These stairs look like a nightmare.

Came across this picture today. I guess they were built long before codes.

That is actually a common solution some guys use for stairs to the attic of their garage.

But I would be interested to see what current codes say about that kind of stair as long as it's not for access to a normal room.

Interesting, never knew such a monster existed. I'd hate to fall down them.

Someone else has them too.

I've seen variations on those type of stairs.
They were called "ladder"/"ship's-ladder" stairs.
Might pass code for something like, attic access -
not, for any type of "main" stairs.
Seen some rather, creative designs -
(sorry, I don't have any pics!)

I think there would be a problem with the railing/picket setup.
I've fallen down stairs (no problem - Ouch!) -
Those would be Ouch, Ouch, Ouch.....! :)

The hand rail in the first pic looks to be way too low.

The railings for "ladder-stairs" will be much closer to the stair treads than normal stairs.

Those would suck for walking a hand truck up.

Yup...ship's ladders.

Yeah! -
I've seen some interesting designs made out of wood!
One I remember had railings -
it also had "hand-holds"; in the treads!
