A telemarketer called with a "special deal"

and I said "Why should I believe you?"

She didn't have an answer.

Is it just that simple to make these people go away?

They probably didn't have an answer for that in their script. Pretty much - if it's not in their script these people shut down.

I've got a cell phone only - no land line. I have caller ID, and never answer calls from unfamiliar numbers.

Works well for me.

Had another one.

She wanted to speak to xxx.
I said, For what purpose?
After a pause she said, This is a courtesy call.
I said, What is a courtesy call?
Again, a long pause and then she said, "I want to speak to xxx".
I asked again, What is a courtesy call?

She then took a scolding tone and said she needs to speak to xxx and I said, This call is over.

I should keep these people on the line just to practice my mind games.
