Subcontractors fee
I am interested in what everyone thinks a subcontractor that can frame, hang rock, tape, paint, do electrical and light plumbing, roofing and finish work is worth an hour? I have been doing this for 12 years and we do everything even concrete. I don't believe I am being paid a fair amount. I also believe the contractor that uses me still makes money off me which is frustrating. Please let me know what you guys and girls think. Thanks.

Th sad thing is if you only did one of those things, specialized in only one area, you'd get paid twice as much.

Otherwise you're just a general handy man, $12-15 an hour. Am I right?

As an electrician I get $15 an hour. As an hvac techncian I can go upwards of $100.

When the contractor STOPS making money off of you, your services will no longer be needed.

Why shouldn’t the contractor make money off you?

Is he suppose to feed you for nothing? If you want to make more money then learn the business end of things and sell your own work.

12 years experience in all of the trades you listed to me means you’re a master of none.

Sorry if I’m coming off a little harsh but that’s just the way it is.

I am no handy man, I have built countless houses from top to bottom. How is it fair that a guy who can do everything gets paid less than a guy who can do one thing. We don't stop the project mid flow to wait for a sheetrocker or taper we step up and do it ourselves. Considering that I do 90 percent of the work and the gc basically gets the jobs ... Don't see how that's fair.

Carpenters up this area get paid 25 to 30 an hour, I get 17.50. Also for the person who told me to learn the business end of things can take that comment back. I have helped my gc more than any sub should. When I have to do projects from start to finish and all he does is write and hand them the bill pretty sure a guy with middle school education can write a bill. Frankly he doesn't do that well he always comes in over and loses the extra money he could give me.

I am a master of nothing that just hit me....that blows.

As a subcontractor, why are you working by the hour? I bid my jobs and tell them what my price is. They can then take it or leave it. You may want to reevaluate how you do subcontract work.

Here's the problem... I am set as a sub, own insurance own name all that stuff. But I work almost exclusively for my uncle. That is where the problem comes in. Been with him since highschool.

I wish I could set my price but I'm almost on salary. I'm stuck. Just kinda wanted some evidence to go on with this.

If you truely knew the business end. You wouldn't have made this thread.

Dude really, I want to get paid fairly for my work I don't want to go on my own. That's a huge difference. I don't have the overhead to do that, least not right now.

I never asked for a butt chewing either guys. Just wanted to know rates didn't need a lesson in anything.
