Maybe some fun ones--My brother turned 21 on this trip and there was that littering ticket--
and the school bus land speed record--or the fire--no that might be best left out.--Mike--

Story time---1952 Dodge school bus

A quickie--then I need to go shopping.

That old farm was a nice place for the night We tucked the vehicles back behind the buildings.

Better out of sight when we're that close to town. I found an old early 30s Packard along side the barn.

Great shape--all there .I still wish we had time to find the owner I would have bought that car.

Chuck had run into town to get the number of a truck place that could fix the brakes--

It was decided that I would get to drive the big bus to the repair shop.

As I sat in the drivers seat I realized that this was going to be the first time my brother piloted the VW during the pull start dance.

He's always been smarter than me so I didn't give him any instructions---simple--Get her rolling--back off on the speed--watch the big bus fire up--get out of the way.

He hooked the 6 foot long cable to the front bumper of the VW--onto a hook on the front of the bus and gave me the 'ignition on' signal and slowly started the big bus rolling.

He backed off till we almost touched and I popped the clutch.

This seems to be the part he wasn't paying attention to--(get out of the way)

The bus lurched forward and I burst out laughing as he waved frantically for me to stop.

Kerthunk I bashed into the front of the VW and knocked the emblem right off the front.

Duh---we had no brakes--that's why I was driving the big bus.

Kind of funny now---He was really alarmed at the time.

Ah yes--The trip to the repair shop was uneventful ,except for the fact that the rear duallys were so rusted that that could not be removed.

A small fortune would be needed for a proper brake job----which was not in the pocket that day.

The mechanic was good ,however and had a solution of sorts.

He figures that if he put on an over sized master cylinder the extra capacity would be enough to get us to the west coast.

So a decision was made----money won over logic and common sense and off we went.

The brakes now worked when going down hill---but wouldn't hold the bus when going up hill.

Well, a person can get used to that!

The trip across Nebraska was pleasant and uneventful ----

We stopped for a dip into the Platte river---that's one quick bit of water---real easy to bob up a hundred feet from where you dove in.

The water was cold and the semis honking their horns at Donna made for a rather short stay.

It seems that Donna enjoyed letting the sun shine where the sun don't shine----and the Semis were getting an eye full over the bridge rail.

We made it to Jackson Hole Wyoming near sundown and decided to camp in a parking lot at the Elk preserve.

We could see a stores lights just down the road so we took off on foot for supplies.

We stocked up on beer, sandwiches and ---fireworks---one grocery bag full per person.

Isn't it funny how trouble always starts out as fun?

We were all hungry and started washing down the sandwiches with the beer---

The fireworks were a blast---we set off all four bags full---roman candles.wizzers -hundreds of bottle rocket all punctuated with beer.

My brother got pretty smashed and retired to bed--Ron and Donna soon followed leaving me the only one out when a search light scanned the parking lot.

He slowly scanned the lot--the light showing every burn rocket--the tin propeller from the wizzers and the trash from four grocery bags full of fireworks.

Oh,the shame of it----I got a royal bawling out by a cop who may have taken lessons from my own mother.

By the time I finished picking up that parking lot I was truly ashamed of my self--That man was good.

I had a nice ticket for littering ---and a healthy respect for that guys technique for making a fellow feel really low.---Mike---

I can't imagine how that must have felt.

I think I am going to head back down to the shop a bit, and will probably be about ready to turn in after that, but am looking forward to more of this travel documentary in the upcoming week!
