A story

Let's ALL write a story! I'll do the first paragraph to set the mood, style and a couple of basic characters, anyone else can add more as they wish! Pretty simple, right? So let's have some fun! ....all posts subject to spelling, grammar and story continuity editing. Comments welcome, though they will be removed daily as to not detract from the story. This story was started over at Craftforum.com, but somehow slowed down. Any suggestions or contributions are welcomed.

OK, I'll shut up now and start the story.... Gather round every one!

The ichor of the beast dripped slowly from the tip of his blade, drop by drop, eerily disappearing into the hot sand. Unlike blood, which his sword had seen much of, this ooze from the beast laying before him seemed to have life itself. As he watched, the swirling colors seemingly were absorbed by his blade, until it was as clean as if he had just drawn it from it's sheath. The creature before him, now dead, no longer bothered the dog sitting at his side, cocking his head curiously from side to side at this reptilian looking animal they had moments before been fighting with. He looked up at the man, who was sliding his sword back into it's place at his side, and then jumped suddenly backwards as the thing before them dissolved in a wisp of smoke. The man merely grunted "sorcery" to himself and stepped over the area it had been and into the doorway it had protected. The queen had told him the first of the 3 doors would be protected by by a large lizard, but had neglected to mention the size of the thing and the fact it walked upright like a man. In the future, he would take her words with a grain of salt. A slap on his thigh brought the dog through the doorway to his side. After the dog had helped him kill the lizard-creature, he was glad he had befriended the animal that had wandered into his campsite the night before, hungry and lean, though still large and muscular. He had shared his meager portions of meat and bread with the dog before retiring.

As he stood in the doorway, looking down the meandering corridor and wondering at the shadows, he could not shake the feeling that he was being watched. He took a few careful steps, and then flattened himself against the cold wall as a pale, ghostly figure materialized in the distance. It did not speak, but looked beyond him to the door, then turned and walked around the corner and was gone.

The queen had told him to ignore the ghost as it was harmless, but he kept his hand on his sword hilt anyways as he continued to the 2nd door. He was wary of the queen after her first "lapse of information."

The second door loomed before him, it was made of some strange metal and though it appeared as delicate and light as tissue paper he found it weighed a literal ton. With a great deal of effort he grunted and pulled at the metal door, able to open it just wide enough for him and his companion to squeeze through.

As he and the dog passed through the door, it slid closed again. He looked back where the doorway had been, but could not see an opening. "A seamless door" he thought. Another item that the queen had forgotten to mention.
He sighed and turned to walk forward, but realized that the space in front of him was in total darkness. He couldn't even see his hand in front of his face.
He slapped his thigh again to bring the dog back to him.

But his faithful friend didn't return. He took one step forward and again, slapped his thigh, thinking the dog would soon be by his side. It was then that he realized that he didn't hear the sound of his hand slapping his thigh. "What the...?" He said as he looked down to see the leg he had stepped forward with was missing. So too was the hand that had reached into the black space in front of him!

Fearful of being consumed by this unknown force, he stepped quickly back and instantly felt himself complete once more. He heard the dog whining before him, beyond the area he had just backed away from, so he stepped cautiously forward to continue. His body chilled as he proceeded, though he felt no other ill effect. In three steps, he was through the darkness and found himself in the third room. Light emanated from odd crystals embedded in the walls. The animal sat on the marbled floor of the huge antechamber, growling louder as he came closer to it. The large dog leaped at him, as if to attack, though he realized in an instant it had just saved his life, as spiked projectiles shot across the spot he had been in and lodged themselves in the opposite wall.

He patted the large head in thanks and rose to his feet. He drew his sword in an instant as the ghostly figure appeared again, this time merely hovering near the high ceiling in the center of the room. It glowed softly, the outline never quite clear. It seemed to be pointing down, to the center of the room. Then it was gone once more. But nothing was there but a large, round stone, possibly used in another time as an altar.

Or was it?

The stone seemed to be vibrating. He approached it with caution, with sword in hand.

The stone had a long gash in the top of it. He wondered at the size of the gash, then looked at his weapon in hand, and realization came to him. He was looking at a legend. It could not be, yet there it was. He reached out his hand, as if to touch it. The dog growled at him and took a step forward placing himself between the man and the stone.

Of course this could not be the Sword of Dreams! He had taken it from an anonymous opponent on the battlefield years ago! More illusions and sorcery, he thought to himself, and in that instant, the stone disappeared. In it's stead, laying on the stone floor, a book, old and battered, it's leather-bound cover cracked and split with age. The dog seemed to be a bit more relaxed as he reached down to pick it up.

As he reached toward the book, the air around it, where the stone had been, didn't feel like air. It felt more like he was reaching his hand, wrist and arm into a gel of some kind. An invisible gel.

As he clenched his fingers around the binding of the book, he found that he could no longer move his arm. Around it he felt a sense of heaviness. A heaviness he had felt before, but couldn't recall when or where.

Sand. That was it. As a young boy, building sand castles at the beach, he and his friends would bury their legs in wet sand up to their knees or their arms up to just beneath the shoulder, leaving the buried muscles almost powerless. As the memories flooded back, he realized there was much more involved in picking up the leather book than he anticipated.

He knew now that the rock had disappeared, but never really went away. Now it enveloped his arm, trapping him there.

He immediately let go of the book, and felt his body return to normal. Stepping back, he pondered how to release the book, which he now assumed would harbor the answer to why he was here in the first place. It was the book which the queen had sent him after to begin with. He removed his cloak and tried to pull it away with it, but every time he moved the book, it froze solid in the massive stone, which formed in 'layers' around the book on each attempt, growing larger as he pulled harder, then disappearing altogether when he retrieved his cloak.

He pondered the situation for a while, wondering if the stone he'd seen before had a deeper meaning to it... perhaps the appearance of the stone had some clue to it? Maybe, just maybe, even if it wasn't the Sword of Legends, maybe it could serve as a key in this current situation?

He tried to put the sword into the slot in the stone, but it did not properly fit. He removed the sword, and as he did, the stone wavered and disappeared again. This time, as he touched the book his arm did not feel heavy. He could not lift the book, though, as if it were nailed to the floor.

The ghostly figure was moving in and out of his peripheral vision, and as he turned he saw the figure motioning for him to kneel. With his sword still in hand, he went down on one knee. It felt as if there were no earth under him for a brief moment, and then it stabilized. He looked at the stone again, and the book was gone.

Nothing could have prepared him for what was to come next. Chains shot up from the floor and attached themselves to his arms. The sword that he treasured lay on the floor in front of him, seemed to sink into the floor. A bright light exploded in the room and he had to shut his eyes or be blinded by it. A faint touch on his cheek brought his eyes open again and he was shocked by what stood in front of him.

A woman stood where the stone once was. A long flowing gown flowed down her body giving her the appearance of a ghost. The pale blue material shined and moved in a breeze that had not been there moments before. The tie that had held his hair back had fallen away and his hair blew into his eyes. Wanting to see the beauty in front him he tried to lift his arm only to find that he was chained to the floor. “What kind of..” his mouth shut before he could finish, a ghostly finger lay on his lips telling him to be silent.

Ice ran up and down his spine from that touch and a shiver he wanted to hide shock him. Lifting his head he looked into the deep emerald eyes of this woman who had touched more than just his lips it would seem. In her other hand was the book he had been so desperately trying to get.
