It's fictionally in Mississippi.
Filmed in some real Miss town, they changed all the local business signs to say Sparta.
I watch the series every morning because I like Carrol o'Conner and his real life son, Hugh, who plays one of the deputies (who, in real life, committed suicide-by-shotgun because of a fatal disease he couldn't deal with any more. Sad.)
