So we go to bed last night ......
My fiance and I bought this house in November. Between ripping out carpet and sanding and redoing all the hardwood we didn't move in until Dec 1st so it's been a few months but not THAT long. This is our first experience with warm weather in this house.

We both have allergies and the house already has forced air heat. Combine this with the fact that the furnace already has the .. (condenser is it?) built in, we are planning on putting in central air but with the upcoming July wedding putting a dent in our bank account we are going to sneak through this summer with window units.

I haven't put any in yet because frankly I still had 2 outlets to change and it just hasn't been that hot. Until yesterday! If you own a cape cod you know that the heat just accumulates upstairs. Yesterday we went to bed, we opened the windows and put a giant fan on us .... it helped a little bit but not much.

So ... I get up this morning nice and sticky from sweating all night to go get a shower and what's the first thing I notice on the wall out in the hallway .............. THE SWITCH FOR THE ATTIC FAN!!!!!!

We both completely forgot we had this thing and that we could have lowered the temperature up there by 5 - 10 degrees in 8 seconds. Instead we slept in a sauna - HA!

At least we'll probably remember from now on.

nice! My rule where i live... no AC till at least mid June, i'm shooting for July this year. The gf is always cold anyway!

We very rarely use AC
Lucky if we have them going 7-14 days a year for 4-6 hours
Ceiling fans & window fans work wonders

Being so close to Lake Michigan for me, what Dave said works the same. Last year if we used the AC for more than 7 days that was a lot. We ususally get cooler at night, so a 20" box fan in the window on the other side of the house usually draws in the cooler night air. First one up in the morning turns it off. Always helps.
I was thinking if installing an attic fan, but could not justify the expense. The $10 box fan works wonders.

I don't do well sleeping in the heat - not at all, the colder the better.

If I'm doing stuff around the house I thrive in the heat - that's why the bedroom was going to be the first wall unit I installed.

I'll report back tomorrow, we'll see how the attic fan works out.

My heat and ac have flipped back and forth since early March!

Scuba_Dave 05-03-2010 04:42 PM

I actually never knew how hot it was here yesterday
It was up to 88, I thought it was just over 80 (it was 44 Wed)
If I had known it was 88 I would have jumped in the solar hot tub I had connected

Local weather is always wrong about the Temps in this area
I usually have thermometers in the windows, but took those to monitor the hot tub & greenhouse

I'm debating on if I want to get a whole house fan. I have ideas of where I would put it. I'm even thinking of just getting a big squirrel cage fan and rigging something myself, but then I have to figure out how to properly insulate it. Most whole house fans have big insulated doors that open and shut.

Where I live we only get a few days per year where it's 25+ outside, so it's not really worth spending the 5k or more for AC.
The nice thing with AC is it also dehumidifies though.

I have 2 attic fans, one I bought - the 2nd one was free w/spare motor
I'm going to hook at least one up in my walk up attic
Maybe on hinge so that I can swing it in front of a West window
I will have windows that open into the great room
So turn on the fan & it will suck the hotter air near the ceiling into the attic & out

And since the great room is about 40" higher then the rest of the house the heat will be pulled from the rest of the house
Plus I have venting skylights everywhere

Know what you mean. I think we have done the same thing here in Alabama. Kind of expensive in this old house. Got a ceiling fan, but never put a motor on it.

Well - attic fan definitely does the trick. One other cool thing it does is that if my fiance is cooking something delicious in the kitchen I can all of a sudden smell it in the upstairs hallway hahahahaha.

Does this work for allergies?

It was on the first billboard I saw in Denmark.

Haha! That's funny. I take them for headaches, as far as I know they do not relieve allergies. Usually when I'm in Denmark i bring a stash of allergy medication from Connecticut since that's where I am most of the time nowadays.
