Renovation Realities

I saw part of an episode of Renovation Realities a little while ago - either on HGTV or DIY. I hate to say it, but I think the average person would walk away from a show like that, dumber for having watched it.

The show opened telling how the homeowner got an unpleasant notice from the city saying he had to paint his house.

He figured that since they didn't say it in a nice way, he'd show them. And he did. He painted his house in a large checkerboard pattern - in pink, turquoise and white. Looks HIDEOUS, but he sure showed them who's boss.

So the main part of the show is him and a friend tearing the old deck off the back of his house and rebuilding it - without a permit. He said he didn't want to get a permit because he wanted to do the whole job in one weekend and didn't have time for inspections.

While they're digging out the post holes, the auger breaks through an old septic tank. Instead of doing anything about it, he goes ahead and uses the hole (with a sonotube) for the post anyway.

I just had to laugh wondering if an inspector from his city's building dept. has seen the show and paid him a visit. It wouldn't have been hard to find the house.

I have to disagree.

As someone who came into Carpentry as a result of having bought The Money Pit and all the associated pain that goes with that, I have to say I think the show offers a needed counter-point to the rest of the DIY "Reality" garbage.

People need to know, man, they need to know.....

Oh a gut job remodel only takes an hour and that's with commercial breaks. OK, pass the sledgehammer.

The sledge hammer on Demo Day always makes me laugh. Hey, lets destroy all this stuff that could have some intrinsic value (even if we only donated it), break things we didn't mean to and throw our backs out in the process.

I quit watching shows like "This old House" and "Hometime" because they usually do so many things wrong that it made me scream at the TV. They teach the DIYers so many wrong ways to do things. Those shows should be sued when their advice costs a HO a bunch of money.

My complaint with Renovation Realities in particular was they stopped showing the finished results (or lack thereof).

In the first season at the end of the episode where they now show the "After" project looking all nice and professional they used to show a whole list of Punch Out stuff that still wasn't complete.

All those nagging little "one off" situations that we know and love.

i hatttte anything with mike holmes! i feel he has destoryed residential building. he has put fear into every customer. he makes it sound like every builder, contractor, etc are a bunch of crooks out to get you. and i always see him doing stuff wrong and im always yelling at the tv. im not aloud to watch anymore cause it brings out the worst in me lol

I haven't watched Holmes in over a year. Not for any reason, just not scheduling the time. I don't recall him being to bad but he certainly isn't doing any favors for the rest of the GC's .

Won't be long before every State will require you to have a two year degree from The Holmes Institute For Building Sciences in order to get licensed.

Yea I seen Holmes do some stupid stuff,like when he tied abandoned wires together hanging in a wall and said the reason being is if they hook them up again they'll blow a breaker?

Musta missed that episode.

I don't think Electric is his strong suit. I like that he brings in a lot of Subs and treats them like professionals (at least on camera) and he doesn't seem to mind turning those parts over to specialists.

My wife hates his show. Says he comes off like an arrogant deleted. I tend to agree.

p.s. Just for my own education, since electric is not my strong suit, wouldn't that work if you wired Hot to Ground? Seems to me the easy solution would be to cut the run short at the Main.

I find that strange. That doesn't seem like his style. I would expect him to say "Tear out the whole electric, replace the panel and rewire the entire house and the garage!!! We got abandoned wires here!!!"

Rehab Addict this morning.

The hostess was using a chemical stripper indoors with no respirator, no safety glasses and wrist length rubber gloves with a "boob" tanktop. Her comment?

"This stuff'll strip the meat right off your bones"

That must be why she's wearing the appropriate safety attire.

Wife and I enjoy some of the shows.


Can't remember which one it was, but the hubby was supposedly left stranded on the roof while the wife went to the store to get something they needed, and a storm was brewing.


Of course the show, like all of them, was a made for TV thing, so there actually was a camera man up on the roof as well, and the rest of the film crew on the ground, so the entire "stranded" things was total BS.




I have a friend who has done a couple of the makeover shows where it seems there are only a couple people working on the house, when in fact there is a HUGE crew.

It's NOT reality in any manner, but it is TV.....
