The unemployment rate in my county has gone from 10.5% in 8/09 to 11% today and I know that number is much higher in construction.

They also use false numbers to report the unemployment rate
They go by the people who are ON unemployment
NOT the actual number of people who are unemployed & who have exhausted their benefits

I think a big factor is that after so many layoffs, a lot of employers consider themselves able to continue functioning with the staff they currently have. So even though they have the resources, they are slow to hire people back on.

We recently had a meeting at my workplace where the company that handles our 401k had some reps give a talk. They said the forecast is for unemployment to continue to rise this year, and also to continue to rise next year as well. Forecast doesn't look good.

I'm holding out hope.

There's an army of economists out there who earn a living by explaining why their prior predictions didn't come true.

not sure about you guys but construction is not a sector i would want to be in. around my area there are literally hundreds of skilled workers trying to find work doing anything. in fact i hired a good rocker who taped and finished an entire house for $350. he was delighted to get the money. not sure what the rest of the country is like but there are a few states with major housing problems and many with a flat market. i would seriously be looking to branch out if i was a builder.

If the recession is over, you wouldn't be able to tell it from looking at operations in the company that I work for.

These economist tend to remind me of the meteorologist that predict how many hurricanes are going to form, months before hurricane season - if they're right they're intellectual giants, if they're wrong there must have been other mitigating circumstances that they also predicted.

I recently retired because of no work. I am drawing more in soc sec than I was making working. I had one job between Feb and Aug. A one day job.

Working in IT/telcom has been a unique experience, in that well-paid figureheads who make IT unpleasant or annoying (read: Project managers) have been getting axed, and the gearheads have become more deeply embedded. It's basically the exact opposite of what I see on the news.

Even if entire branches of a company shrivel up and die, there's still the same number of servers sitting in the datacenter. (A few HVAC guys I know with datacenter support contracts are cleaning up.)
