rafter help
I am building a 18x18 cottage with a 12 12 pitch roof with 2x12 rafters. How wide do i need my ridge board to be?

The width of the ridge must at least cover the cut of the rafter. That rafter cut will be about 16". This can be achieved with an lvl. Around here, an engineer would be required to spec that roof.

Thanks. Not sure what a lvl is. Do they make a 16" width 2" board?

lvl is laminated veneer lumber. They are available in widths up to 24". They are basically an engineered plywood beam. Standard lumber is only available up to x12 which measures approximately 11 1/4"

Thank you. Can i order that at my local lumber yard? And i can still run 2x12's off of the lvl?

Yes, the lumberyard can order them. While you are there, go over the plan with them and insure that what you propose is adequate. I am by no means telling you what to use for a ridge. Sounds like in reading your other post that you may have a real tough time cutting the rafters correctly. Figuring the length is carpentry 101. It would benefit you to hire someone to at least help with layour, cutting, and assembly.

Thanks. I already went to the lumber yard and they are the ones that suggested the 2x12x20 ridge board with the 2x12 rafters. Which sounds like that is wrong. They also told me i would need 16 footers for the length.

Also. I was told that i could order 2 2x8 by 20 ridge beams and put them together to make a 16" width board?

Why are you using 2 X 12's for rafters? No one here has seen your plans but that's one wide board for a rafter.

And you need to find a new lumber yard. All the info I've heard you mention is wrong so far.

Are you designing this as you go or do you have working plans to go by?
