Permit questions!!
I need alittle help here, i realize that all areas have completely diff laws when it comes to this but can anyone tell me who has experience....i have a home in a neighborhood is very large and property size is not big so houses are very close, i have a standard levitt cape house and the house behind me has a brick house redone looks like a building!! (eyesore) it looks as if its a 3 family home. But my question is are they allowed to have balconies that can overlook directly into my backyard!? I have no privacy! The balconies have to be at least 12 ft high and i have a 6 foot fence that does nothing. Im on long island. Anyone help?

As for your 6' fence, look up "spite fence" which yours probably isn't.
IIRC the books on Neighbor Law will mostly have bad news for you. Nolo Press puts out at least one.

If they can see you, can't you also see them? Is one of you doing something that shouldn't be seen?

See f you can build a 20' or higher deck in your yard. Or over the roof. No such thing as real privacy in the city.

Bummer. I guess you'll have to let them look at you all the time.
Look into fast growing trees that top out around 20' but don't grow any wider than you want. Some evergreens are tall and skinny.

Run around in a speedo, maybe they will take down their deck.

Ok I apologize and I don't mean to be rude, but I have to ask the obvious. How did you not notice the buildings presence when you first went to view the property?

It was probably dark, or the wife was the one that went and looked at the property, and did not go out the back.

It is kind of late now. Should have thought about that before you signed all of the paperwork. Sorry to say this, but if you do not like your neighbors, they are probably thinking the same thing about you.
What happened with people getting to know the people in their neighborhood. Too many people shut themselves inside after they get home from work, or on the weekends.

All good points Greg, but it sounds like the OP is not happy with the fishbowl effect. Sometimes you just want to be left alone, especially if Gladys Gravits is your neighbour
