Painting a rusty steel filing cabinet

Hi there! I need help, I wanted to find out how to go about a filing cabinet that's starting to rust. How should I go about painting it? There are rust building up on some pats of the cabinet and I wanted to remove the rust and paint the whole cabinet with spray canned paint. Could somebody please help me out? Thanks alot.

I would recommend lightly sand the cabinet. Then using a rust converter in the rust areas. There used to be product that could be sprayed on called "extend" I did not find it on a web search. This link appears to be same type of thing.

It converts the rusted steel into a none corroding coating. After application is completed. may have to again be lightly sanded again. Then it is ready for spray paint. When painting use multiple thinner coats to prevent running of the paint.

Thanks! BTW, would you suggest I spray on a base coat of primer first? I was using a steel spatula to remove some stubborn rust and some of the old paint are coming off as well. Would you recommend I apply paint remover for a smoother finish?

The paint remover would be optional if it is the original finnish, If it lookes to be already a repaint it would be wise. ( Filling cabinets are normally a thin sprayed on or dipped electrolysis finnish. But the primer would be wise. If you are looking for a very good smooth fininsh wet sanding and more can be done but at that point you are getting more into auto body techniques and I don't know if a spray can will satisfy.
