One's that got away

Sorry, not "fish" - not members of the opposite sex!
Cars!
I'm sure this has happened to a lot of people, over time!

This is in the early/middle 80's.
I'm working on a house in Elmhurst, Ill.
Aluminum soffit and fascia, wrap all the window and door trim -
some porch work - 2 storm-doors.
Nice people - I'm trying to do a good job - they realize that - coffee
and donuts/pastries in the morning - coffee and sandwiches at lunch!!!
(I hate that when it happens!)
We talk - I get to know them - the lady of the house tells me their son
is in the Army, he wants them to sell his car.

I ask what kind of car -
Dodge (that could be a lot of things!)
How much - 2500 dollars.
I ask if I can look at it.
Sure.
We go back to a detached, 2-car garage.
We go inside and pull off the cover over the car.
What's this!!!???
It's a 67 - 68 (Sorry, can't remember the exact year) Dodge,
Challenger!
The "wedge"!
I know what this is!!!!!

It's yellow with a black convertible top - white interior - no damage
inside or outside.
I was a mechanic for a cab co. - I look at the underside - nobody has
messed with the suspension -
It's Stock!!
(Other than the tires)

I ask them if I can hear it run - they say sure - if you want you can take it for a drive - NO, no drive!
She gives me the keys - I get in and start it - it's cold - I give it about
20 min. to warm up - a "purring kitten" - with "claws"!!!
It's warmed up - I get back in - put the parking brake on, put my foot
down on the brake-peddle, put it in 1st gear - (Yeah, 4 speed!) -
give it some gas.
The only thing it's telling me is - "Let me go!!!!!!!!!"
POWER!!!

I shut it off.
Pop the hood - What's This?? - 326, Dual-Quad, Hemi!! Factory!!!
What's going through my mind is "juggling" money around.
I might have been able to do it.
I would have been very, "unpopular" with my girl-friend (who I lived with -
at the time - she became my second wife!)
I didn't "pull the trigger"!!

2500 hundred - what's that worth now - how many "tens" of thousands??!

One that got away!!!

Unfortunately, I've got more!!!

Happy Holidays!

Sorry!!!
Could have been a Charger - it was a 326 Hemi. (as far as I know)
(Ok - to make matters worse - if it wasn't a 326, what was it? - 426?)
Ouch!!
(Maybe it was a 427, 454, 350, 289, 283, etc...)
I'm really, sorry!
Excuse me for my grievious, "faux pa"!
The point is - I ran into something - it looked like I should think about
acquiring it!
I didn't! Oops!

(I stand, corrected!)

It's OK, ross My memory ain't what it used to be, either. Yeah, probably a Charger and it was 426ci that used the dual Carter quads. A friend of mine had one of those and DAMN it was fast!!! Believe they only sold enough of those so they could call it a production engine for NASCAR rules.

"ratherbefishin'"
Thanks for the clarification!
I was a "Chevy" - "Ford" person!
(It's a matter of "taste"!)

Sometime in the 70's -
I'm at my father's/stepmother's house.
One of my step-brothers shows up - what's he driving???
1958 Corvette - Black; white, leather interior!
Pristine!!
He had his mechanic go through it - change the fluids, brakes, tires -
good to go!
17,000+ miles.
283, dual-quad, 4-speed.
(OK - before anybody gets "particular" - might have been a 327 or 396 -
his mechanic went through it, and that's what he told him!!)
(OK - maybe it wasn't "Black" - maybe it was "Ebony"!?)
Back in a few!

My step-brother decides that it's OK to let me take it out for a "spin"!
(Ha, ha , ha - he's going to ride "shot-gun" - he doesn't know what
he's in for!!!)
I back it out and take it through the side-streets - trying to get the feel
of the clutch and the 4-speed.
We get on Case Ave. going South.
Turn right onto Case Ave. - hammer down!!!
Nice clutch - nice 4-speed!!
Oh no - "Rubber" in all 4 gears!!! (he, he, he!)
As that great philosopher - "Ted Nugent" said - "Get Down"!!
Scared the "ever-loving", "something" out of him!
(He was visibly - "shaken"! - or was that "moved"!?!)

(Remember, no "Corvettes" or people were harmed in the production of this
story, saga, tale, etc...)
(Make sure your pets are "spayed" or "neutered"!)
(Don't "draw to an inside straight"!)
