You don't offer an evidence of this being anything more than your opinion, but I have always felt the same way. What better way to keep people buying them keeping them scared (anyone remember the big Y2K panic?) I would not be surprised at all if this was proven to be true!

I would believe it. Not to be destructive but proactive to better their products.

Norton Antivirus shuts off if not renewed

Norton let a virus into my computer a few weeks back ( actually it was a rootkit, plus a few other nice things ). You can get live online help from Norton when you run into a problem. Unfortunately they were all pretty useless. I found some helpful forums and got myself cleaned up. Just as all this was happening, I started getting pop ups from Norton ---"you have 28 days left on your Norton subscription - would you like to renew now? "
ooohh, bad timing. I was pretty pissed about the whole experience. I wasn't going to renew just out of principle. I got Bitdefender. I have read that un-installing Norton can be a challenge, but I downloaded a routine off the Norton website to un-install, and it seemed to work fine.

The uninstall Norton offers, doesn't remove all their files.

WOW - thanks for the update. I don't think I'll be upgrading either.

To be honest, this is the first year I've actually renewed my subscription - I always keep my drives partitioned and format c: once every 12 months. Usually the "Norton is about to expire" warning is my sign that it's time for a swipe.
