New Car Engine Sends Shock Waves Through Auto Industry

I searched but didn't see this already - I figured someone else would have already posted it.

http://www.weather.com/outlook/weath...92a45142dcaf80

Quote:
researchers at Michigan State University have built a prototype gasoline engine that requires no transmission, crankshaft, pistons, valves, fuel compression, cooling systems or fluids. Their so-called Wave Disk Generator could greatly improve the efficiency of gas-electric hybrid automobiles and potentially decrease auto emissions up to 90 percent when compared with conventional combustion engines.

The engine has a rotor that's equipped with wave-like channels that trap and mix oxygen and fuel as the rotor spins. These central inlets are blocked off, building pressure within the chamber, causing a shock wave that ignites the compressed air and fuel to transmit energy.

The Wave Disk Generator uses 60 percent of its fuel for propulsion; standard car engines use just 15 percent. As a result, the generator is 3.5 times more fuel efficient than typical combustion engines.
I thought this sounded way cool - looking forwards to info as they progress through a functionl prototype.

That's what it sounds like, a rotary engine with one of those transmissions that looks like 2 ice-cream cones with a rubber band around them (constant velocity something. Totally gear-less).

The oil industry will buy that up in no time and we'll never hear of it again. Sad how things work. We should be running on 0 emission cars by now but political/bureaucratic BS is are stopping it.

that's probable. but the us auto industry would have a good chance to get competitive again with green stuff like that!

It's not anything like a wankel engine, which simply has pistons shaped like triangles which go round and round instead of up and down. It really is more like a turbine.

What's cool about this is that it is essentially purpose-built as a generator for an electric/hybrid vehicle. It's never meant to be hooked directly to the drivetrain. Pretty dang neat.
