National Tradesman Day.

Sept. 21 is National Tradesman day. It is to honor all trades, such as electricians, plumbers, HVAC techs, carpenters, roofers, mechanics, flooring installers, etc.

There is a national shortage of many tradespeople. Many schools no longer have any kind of shop classes, opting instead for computer classes and other high tech classes.

Happy Tradesman Day Rusty. The young folks just out of school would be a lot better off, job wise, if they took a tech school instead of or with collage.

I tryed to work with our local high school doing what we used to call work study. The seniors would work 1/2 a day working in one of the trades.
They could have careless about doing it.
Even though there's 0 industry or jobs with benifits within 1 1/2 from here.

The only Tec school around here located almost an hour away. Someone donated the land so some committe came up with the bright idea to build it where it is.
Even though it's in the middle of no where.

Our local high school teaches a wood working class, but hires outside contractors to build any small outside buildings they need and do any needed repairs on the ones they already have, now that just makes no since to me.

This may be a little off topic but one of the best deals going is the Collage of The Ozarks near Branson Mo. The students have to work on campas x numbers of hours a week in order to be able to attend. That collage is totally self sufficient, they raise all their food, build all of their buildings, make their cloth, grind their corn, etc. They even have their own airport and planes. It was refreshing to see a group of young people so enthused about life and working with their hands to see first hand how life could be.

OK I'm through now, sorry to hijack the thread.

Our local school got rid of shop classes more than 10 years ago.

Illinois Manufactures and a significant not for profit took on a pilot project at Austin Polytechnic here in Chicago. It is a real, not magnet, high school in a very challenged neighborhood. They built a drop dead machine shop environment with 3D printers, numerically controlled machining tools, etc. All the kids take classes as it is built into the curricula. If they stick with it, they graduate in the usual manner but with machine tool certification too. There are more jobs for such skilled workers than can be filled here so they are more or less certain of getting a good one, even part time if they want to go to college.
