Michael Phelps

Just watched a mini documentary on Phelps. He only needs to medal in three of his events to become the most accomplished and decorated olympian in history. He currently holds 16 medals..14 gold and 2 bronze

Ironically, the greatest challenger to achieving his goals is his own American teamate Ryan Lochte

Can't wait to see the races

I'm pretty sure that, unless something goes terribly awry, he's going to blow the doors off the "need 3 metals" goal.

Funny thing is that, during the swim trials here in Omaha, Phelps wasn't the talk of the town. It was Lochte, and a couple of the young ladies.

It should be a fun Olympics to watch!

Thats the thing, Lochte is an up and coming contender, but you are right even if Lochte takes gold, Phelps will still take silver or bronze

Regardless, Phelps is retiring after these games

Sadly, two of Canada's best hopefulls in Diving and hurdles have had issues. Our best hurdler somehow didn't make the final qualifier and our diver had a terrible accident on the boards recently and almost gave himself a lobodomy. It remains to be seen whether he will recover in time.

I am not familiar with your American female swimmers. Not yet anyway

I'm sure Phelps will snap up a couple of Medals - enough to hit his "goal". You won't see a repeat of Beijing but I'm sure he'll get what he needs.

It seems unfair sometimes doesn't it? Misty and Kerri have to win 10 games of beach volley in order go get their one medal while Michael is ripping one off each day.

Why is it unfair? All the athletes have worked hard, but he has an extraordinary talent. I think he has earned everything he has coming to him

OK, maybe unfair wasn't the right word. I just meant they both win every day for 7 days, he gets 7 medals, they get 1

Whats up with Ye Shiwen. Freak of nature or doping ? Apparently, it could take years before testing technology catches up with masking.

If she is clean what a shame to have your beyond human achievements marred by such a heavy cloud.

Its hard not to be skeptical when you compare Phelps to Ye

He 28 (?) yr old man She 16 yr old girl
He 6 ft 5 in She almost a foot shorter

According to their split times in a 400 metre freestyle ...last 50 metres...

She is the faster swimmer. This is beyond an outstanding, amazing swim
AS I said..hard not to be skeptical

What a few swims! How reminiscent of Beijing was it when Phelps got silver? The guy who got gold looked almost EXACTLY like Phelps did in Beijing with that odd 1/2 stroke he took which put him in first place. Looked like phelps did it, but at least he got silver.

And that relay ... that wasn't a race, that was a systematic beatdown!!!! Lochte just put them way out front and each guy just made that gap bigger.... by the end it was a mere formality. What a way to get the 19th medal though - GOLD and with all your teammates!

Yup yup, I've been catching Phelps and Ryan Lochte here and there. Watched the team race when Phelps received his 19th medal, making history. They just were in a league all of their own that race, so it seemed.

Not interested in the gymastics, especially not the men's this year, but did anyone else watch the cycling time trials? I got to see Bradley Wiggins begin and then went to work but I know he won. And he only just won the Tour De France a week ago!

And what about that guy's chain breaking on the take off? And then I heard he had to switch bikes again? And in the Olympics of all times!

Hope that wasn't a Shimano chain.. (<---what I ride)

After Ryder Hesjedal failed to place the only other cyclist whom I was interested in was Canada's Clara Hughes. She came 5th just missing her 7th olympic medal. Most of her medals have been earned in the winter olympics. She earned gold in Vancouver for speed skating.

Anybody who makes it to the olympics in the first place is a winner, but to medal out in both winter and summer is quite the accomplishment.
