Mary moves to Nebraska

Mary wanted out.

She had four little children and did not want to raise them in the white laboratory that had been her family home for ten generations.

One of the lab ladies said she was going to Nebraska for Christmas and Mary made the decision.

"Quick,Kids,pack enough corn for a long trip. Shut up and follow me, Not a word!"

She tested the air with her whiskers,flicked her tail twice and shouted,"Jump!"

Silently the five mice landed in the lab ladies purse .

"Merry Christmas,everybody! I've got to go the weather is changing."

Grandpa was in the garage putting the finishing touches on a nice wood blanket trunk.

He wanted a really special gift for his daughter. They had had some words the last time he saw her.
This was his first and maybe last chance to patch things up.

Lab girl crossed the Illinois boarder headed west when the gray sky turned to snow.

Lab girl turned on some Christmas music and settled back for the drive across Iowa--

She thought about her dad. The last time she saw him they argued and she had said some things that hurt him. She wanted to get a hug and be forgiven.

In the mean time Mary was having a time trying to keep the kids quiet---they wanted to look out of the windows---and so did Mary--

Mary gave the kids a plan--out of the purse on to the floor --up the back seat and then onto the back door window ledge. Right behind the lab girl,

They would be able to look out the window and Lab Girl couldn't see them.

" And no squeaking!! Use English you sound like a baby when you do that. One ,two,three,GO!"

This was a special night for every body in the car--Mary and the kids watched in awe as the snow fell on the farm houses lit with twinkling lights.

And lab girl began to sing along with the radio.

The mouse family joined in on the window ledge .

Mary was proud of her kids,their singing especially. They were the best in the 'West side choir.'

Only the mice on the west side of the lab could speak--the other mice were dumb--couldn't even read or open a cage door. Their voices were tiny and mouse sized as you would expect--but nice and clear if you were close enough.

The voices fell silent as Mary and the kids thought of Christmas and their new life in Nebraska,
Lab girl thought of her dad-----"I'd better call,he'll be worried." Lab girl thought out loud.

Mary nodded in agreement.

She flipped open her phone and hit the speed dial---" Hi,dad I'm about a half hour away. The road is bad and I'm going slow. Sorry,it's gotten late."

"Don't worry,sweet heart, Your mom is asleep on the couch and I'm out in the garage. Be careful."

"Oh,Dad I've driven in snow before",Lab girl said with a smile in her voice.

The mouse family scuttled onto the back of the drivers seat to see the road better--it was snowing heavily and they were on full attention.

She was in familiar territory now--She had ridden this road a thousand times as she grew up.

Memories of her dad and his work trucks clattering and growling around the bends on the creek road--his laughing and the good times they had together.

The snow had let up and the headlights shone on the old bridge by the white church.

How many times had she driven down that hill heading home?

She sped up just a bit . It would be nice to be home again.

Grandpa wiped the wax on the blanket trunk one more time and hid the gift under an old quilt.

It wouldn't be long,he thought.

Mary and the kids huddled behind the head rest as the car slowly slid sideways and bumped off the road.

"Mom,It's getting cold." "Is she asleep?" "Where are we?"
"JUST BE QUIET!!" bellowed Mary.

They slid off the road,slowly enough but it smacked a tree with enough force for lab girl to knock herself out as she bounced against the tree.

"Be quiet a moment---everything is fine but I have to think!"

The four young ones stood quietly,side by side and waited for orders.

"O.K.", said Mary quietly " Boys, you must wake her up and keep her awake--shout in her ear,jump up and down,just get her to wake up."

" And you. girls. help me get this phone opened up."

Just wait til Bud finds out more mice are headed his way, this just gets better and better.
