No but there is at least one deceptive part of their ad.

Where it says: never pay a monthly phone bill again.

You may not have a monthly phone bill but you will have an annual one although is is around $20 I think.

Without any research and just the seat of my pants thinking, I would think you need at least DSL service but not even sure that would be fast enough to remove latency problems. You may have to have a broadband speed level for the thing to work well.

edit:

I went and read some reviews. I discovered why that gal is pulling her hair out. She was dealing with customer service. It seems the thing actually works but customer service is horrible.

2nd edit:

you really need to read the chat with customer service on this site. It is just hilarious:

That is funny. The guy narrating the Youtube video didn't seem to be very impressed.

It's bad enough getting an automated message when you call a business. But not being able to get through at all would send me to the funny farm.

I guess if it was as great as they say it is, most people would have one by now and all of the major phone companies would be lowering their rates considerably.

May want to read through this:

http://www.dslreports.com/forum/magicjack

I have found that dslreports/forum to be very helpful with me "cutting the lines" from the phone company.
Although I have not used majicjack myself, I have used other VoIP solutions over the past 4 years, and happy I have made the move.

We still have a home phone because if we shut it off it will cost us $10 more per month for Internet & TV vs the 3 service package
But we hardly use the home phone

I'd like to get rid of my home phone and just use the cell, but I like having a larger phone to hold on to if I'm going to be talking for more than a few minutes. I can't hold the cell phone against my ear with my shoulder while I'm washing dishes or changing a diaper like I can the home phone.

Not only that, but every time my cell phone rings, it takes me a minute to find it in my purse or realize it is my phone and not something made by Fisher-Price or Little Tikes (LOL). So by the time I find it, open it and say 'hello', the caller hangs up.

Does anyone remember the huge cell phone Danny Glover used in Lethal Weapon?

That's a good idea.

I can't imagine cell phones being that big now. If they keep going like they have, they'll be the size of a Q-Tip!

LOL. The tiny one looks like a Barbie Doll phone.

Maybe Cracker Jacks could upgrade their 'surprise in every box' to something like that.

roflmao.... You'd need a holster the size of a car trunk to carry the big phone around.

I've used VOIPs like Skype and Gizmo for as long as they have been around and used to put up with the extra numbers to get decent long distance rates. I just reconfigured my cell plan to a reseller that offers everything service for $50-60/month on the same network as the carrier I had before. That carrier's best price for plans is about $99/month. Things they are a changing. The phone companies still own most of the switching networks to get to a number though so do not expect them to go down without a fight.

Obviously to get VOIP to work you still need an internet connection for that to happen and short of hauling my laptop around I have not yet found a cheap way to do that around where I am. 3G service is crap around here.
