mA on device chargers

I am wanting to avoid using my PC to charge my Mp3 and it requires a charger with an output of 500 mA. They range about $15 and I've seen some for $3, but their output is 300 mA. (Both are 5v). What is the risk with the lower mA? Does that mean it will just take longer? Also, it is worth the extra $8-12 bucks to get a smart charger or would a basic one shut off when the device if charged? (I'm looking to get 4, so the difference is meaningful.)

Thanks.

You've spent how much on a PC and an Mp3, and you are balking at a few bucks extra for a smart charger?
