lack of education OR too many people own houses ?

I think a big part of the spelling/grammar problem (not just here, but on all forums) is mobile phones. Many, many more people are viewing and posting from devices that have small/partial keyboards, no spell check, and a now-common feeling that it's "okay to misspell because you used a mobile device to post." That starts carrying over to the full keyboard user as laziness propagates and everything becomes illegible txt shorthand.

Bush's approval rating declined steadily since shortly after 9-11. My point was simply that the OP could have made his point better by using Bush instead of Obama, but that might have meant admitting that half the country has pretty consistently believed that Obama is doing a good job.

I realize opinion polls vary greatly, but I personally haven't seen too many from sources I'd consider credible that would give any credence to some on the right that would paint our current President as one of, if not THE, worst we've ever had. It's a shame what our political system has become, and believe me, I spread the blame to both sides equally.
Not to get into a political fracas here, but that Gallup Poll shows President Obama's approval rating falling from about 55% to 43%, with more people now disapproving of his job performance than those who approve.

That's since Nov 2009, and it hasn't been a steady decline, which is why I said it's been hovering around 50%

If you CLICK HERE you can compare Obama's approval rating to other Presidents. Take a look at Obama's compared to Saint Reagan's they are very similiar

If you think it's bad now, from the people around my age and a little younger (26 yrs. old) Just wait... My brother, who is a senior in High School, is taking a texting shorthand class this year. They are now offering that as a course to TEACH these kids how to shorthand their typing, like a text message. Just think, lol and omg we added to the dictionary this year.. Even to me, that is just sad.

And I think there are a lot of people that ask a lot of good questions on here. I ask a couple questions here and there, but they hardly get answered. It irritates me when I post a question, it gets 400 views, and 0 replies.. When on another forum I'm on (A vehicle forum) I can get 5 views and 5 replies. And when I do get an answer to a question, sometimes the answer is so vague or non direct, that I am no better off after reading the reply. (No offence to the people that KNOW what they're doing on here.. ) I'm here to learn.. but sometimes that Search button is complete GARBAGE

A lot of people say they don't use proper spelling/grammar on the internet because it's easier. I would think it would be harder to have 'lazy' english and 'professional' english. These people are truly bilingual!

I see nothing wrong in offering classes in things that people are actually going to use. When I was in school stenography was offered as a class. To me the texting class you are describing is a long the same lines and is better in the sense that it's something the vast majoritiy of people who take the class will actually get to use in "everyday life"

A class in texting, in my opinion, is nothing more than another way of 'dumbing down' the kids. It's a waste of an hour of class time when they could be learning something valuable. They'll learn all about texting once they start texting their friends.

Imagine filling out a job application using texting slang.

What's next, Video Games 101?

Other than in the "world of texting" what practical use can you see for this?

I'm not being snarky, and this isn't some trick question. But honestly, I just don't see any use for it. Nothing in business or otherwise uses "lol", "omg" and lingo like that.

Maybe I'm just not seeing something...

Twitter and texting are used "commercially" by compaines to network with their clients and prospects, advertise, etc... Watch a State of the Union Address and you'll see half the gallery of 50+ year old career politicians texting and twittering away like school girls.

Quite true, I've talked to many employers that see poorly spelled applications and simply toss them in the 'round file'. I know I would. Why hire someone that couldn't pay attention in school? Do they really think they'd pay any more attention at a job?

There was a time (not that long ago) that being proficient in golf was seen as an important white collar job skill to some.

Electronic networking is huge right now, and most believe it will be even more a part of our lives in the future.

Some people think that teaching things that have little or no real world relevance to most is a waste of our school resources ( think: latin class).

But they probably weren't hiring people for internet jobs either. Knowing the "lingo" for they type of career you want to work in is important. Companies are currently jumping on the Facebook bandwagon, and in some cases are hiring people who "are fluent in this language"

There is nothing wrong with speaking many languages (txt is a language) - the error comes in using the wrong language in the wrong place. I'm not going to get very far if I walk into a Mexican restaurant and order in Chinese.
