Ok, it the interests of transparency I admit to being a card carrying member of the OFC (Old Fart Club) but seriously, if you think things are bad here you just don't get around the interwebz too much. There are sites absolutely overrun with unintelligible gibberish that completely defies translation. This is an awfully user-friendly site.

And it may just be me, but I can give a little credit to people putting themselves out there asking "stupid" questions since they are at least trying.

lack of education OR too many people own houses ?

I agree that it's really sad to observe the sentence structure/spelling/punctuation being used by what I call the 'younger generation'.

I graduated from HS in 1963 and in 1984, I went to a community college and obtained an associate degree in electronics.

One of my first classes was English composition.
Sometimes the instructor would place an object on his desk and we would have to write a one page composition on it while in class. We were to write a rough draft, a second draft and then the final paper. We then exchanged our papers with each other and graded each other's paper.

Well, in the class were some HS seniors who were supposedly the top in their HS class. They were permitted to take the class with us to get a jump on their college courses.

A couple of times, the paper I received to grade was written by one of these HS seniors.

I remember being appalled at what I read. It was not so much the spelling or the punctuation, but the sentence structure. I remember actually having a hard time deciphering what I was reading. Bear in mind, this was 27 years ago. I can only imagine what it must be like now in HS.

The grading has changed drastically as well. It used to be that 69 percent was a flunking grade. I've heard that, in some schools now, nobody fails regardless of their grade.

Yes, many things have changed over the years including education. Seems like most things for the worse, education being one of them.

I don't think it's a failure of the educational system, but rather a shift in society.

The simple fact of the matter is most people do almost no formal writing once they hand in their final term paper. People rarely send letters anymore since cell phones became affordable, and emails tend to be more conversational and informal. The "real world" values brevity over grammar, so even if your job requires you to do some writing, you are usually limited to a couple lines on a form.

Pick up just about any local small-town newspaper and you can usually find plenty of grammatical errors. Sending emails and texts from tiny mobile phone keyboards encourages us to break rules and use abbreviations that never before existed. This is another big contributor to the change. Even those of us that knew how to write well "once upon a time" start to lose the art simply through lack of exposure.

Everyone makes grammar, spelling and reference mistakes from time to time.

They can be noticed in small newspapers these days because those papers stayed alive by laying off workers; usually editors first.

Large newspapers and magazines still employ a team of editors to check all spelling, grammar and references. They also check things like paragraph structure and the confirm the DATA sources of graphs/charts.

As the wife of an editor who corrects me all the time; I still don't understand the fuss.

The OP's question about lucidity is a good question, that few have addressed. The grammar and spelling are just symptoms of a larger picture of more and more 'younger' people owning homes who are perhaps more clueless about maintenance than they used to be...?

I can't really speak to that - but I expect it is so; someone said "the OP was knocking the fat guy at the gym" - when in fact he was knocking the fact that so many fat people were at the gym in the first place. And someone else commented on 'lowering the general standards', a fact I have stated here on several occasions...so putting it all together I see it as being the result of houses becoming more accessible (ref: the financial crisis of 2008/2009) - and shorter attention spans.

I hope no-one here knocks the guy who tries to find out something; what I knock are people who don't. But I also notice how the average question is not thought out clearly in the first place, let alone asked in a coherent fashion. I guess I am with the OP on this...
