Kitchen Knives

Does anyone have any thoughts on kitchen knives? I have an entry set of Henkels and I don't find them very impressive. Cutco knives are highly rated, but they seem inordinately expensive (although I'm willing to spend $500 or so). I'm too lazy to wash knives by hand, so rust is an issue as well.

Picked up my last set of 6 steak knives for free
They look like the knives from the Outback restaurant
I've yet to spend more then $40 on a set of knives
I still have the knife/block set I bought at my last house over 10 years ago
