Key Duplication Alternatives

I have always left a set of keys with someone nearby that could get me in I ever locked myself out or lost my keys. I was never big about leaving one under the matt, over the door or in a fake rock that looked different than any other.

When I managed property, I kept the key codes for everybody with the locksmith and if they lost a key that could get one without too much trouble. If they added their own locks it was their problem and locksmith bill.

Anyhow, I have mixed emotions about these new key services that will reproduce a key from smartphone (or one supposes other camera images) but I guess key cutting kiosks are appearing in some cities to bypass the locksmith. Some guy out of MIT figured out how to analyze the keys and cut accurate duplicates from images.

If interested, check out Shloosl although I think it is now just Keys Duplicated.com or something. Key Me is another one that showed up on LifeHacker today but the app is only for the iPhone so far.

I am sticking with locksmiths for now. They have always treated me more than fair. Not sure how long such ancient technology will be with us though.

No kidding. Not to derail your thread, but I just found out I have to get a kindle to read my favorite author's new book. She is going to ebooks only. No more "print" books.

Why not try an electronic lock with keypad?

I have an e-book reader and love it. I got the backlit version, so it is way easier to read at night while my wife sleeps.
