Impossible to open packages

I got an even better one. Guy builds a brand new $450,000 house. First time homeowner and came from a foreign warm country. Not familiar with what happens to a house with no furnace. Does not have a alarm system yet or low temp safety tstat hooked to one ( I have and it calls the alarm co if the heat goes below 60F). Poor guy goes to Montreal to visit family for a week. Has a central ventilation system interlocked to the furnace fan. Forgets that system on. Heat goes off. Vent system sucks in -30F air for a week and furnace not running. Water lines burst in new house, toilet exploded upstairs. I get a no heat call in brand new house. Very rare. Get there and see ice running out the front door and all over the walkway. Says to myself this can't be good. Poor guy standing there with his family wondering what to do while it is 32F in the house. I find no power from thermostat and slap in new batteries. Voila, heat is on. Dumbass installer swiped his new batteries for his flashlight and put in old half dead ones. Showed customer the date code on his "new batteries". Not real happy he was. Listened to him talk to insurance company. They were fixing about 90% of the damage but not the toilet ( not sure why ). Moral of the story. DO NOT leave your house unattended or checked for more than 1-2 days in a cold climate. Sad story as that house will never be really new again as all the carpets etc had to be ripped out and hopefully he has no mold problems later.

Frozen pipes is not something I have to worry about.

Not trying to make you guys feel bad....but I'm in shorts and a t-shirt today...and still sweating.

Man, this California weather can be rough

I advise my customers that travel a lot to turn off the water to the house when away---

You lucky Dawg. It is -18F out there an I have to fire up the ole snow thrower and clear the driveway. However I don't have to worry about the big one (earthquake) swallowing me up. Middle of Canada and on solid rock I am.

It gets so cold where I am that I have seen the top of the water meter burst and flood a basement. Homeowner had someone checking the house. They got sick and forgot to get another checker. Heat went off and you know what came next.

Yesterday I dropped in on a house that a regular customer is about to close on---

Good house in a nice neighborhood---the furnace guy was there to inspect the furnaces--one was dead--the second one he condemned as deadly and shut it off---

It's cold here--we will be dipping down to 10 below zero in a couple days---

I drained the pipes and told them to call the owner (a bank) and get it winterized pronto----

Buyer wanted me to fire up the furnace---I declined----

Good. Someone can walk into a house/room full of CO and fall over in just a minute or 2.

Until yesterday they had a homeless guy living in the house---the one working furnace was running wild--he would kick it on--let it run until the house got to hot--then shut it off------repeat as needed----

Buyer had a new thermostat and wanted me to hook it up----no can do---My insurance doesn't cover HVAC failures---

Why does every homeowner think a new thermostat will fix a broken furnace?

LOL. Turn furnace up at stat it works. Turn stat down it shuts off. So thermostat is the cause of all problems.

That is cold enough to warrant draining the HW heater and toilets. RV anti freeze in the traps and maybe even an electric space heater by the main shut off. Brrr!
