Oh I see. Well maybe he's just a little tired and needs a break. Hopefully he comes back soon. Good old feisty Bud keeps it interesting.

I came over here to see if I could puzzle out why I couldn't find any recent posts of Bud's, I hope he's having a nice vacation and gets his tail back here before too long.

I'm not a fan of heaps of ads either. Too many ads can do more harm for the site than good. No point filling it with ads if no one wants to visit anymore to click on them.

The other sites have more of a front end/portal front page, as opposed to the forum list this site has.
It's more modern, offers more options for users and probably has more security fixes and patches, so an upgrade is almost necessary as time goes on, unless you want things to start breaking or the site to be compromised in some way.

A few more ads seem to be on the other sites, but not many. I've seen sites with far more annoying ads...and it's not like they are popup ads or in your face. All are off in the column.

I run a website, and it has an active fan community.
If it wasn't for the fact that I am able to offset the cost of running the site with the income from my web design business, I'd have ads on there as well to try to generate revenue. Running a website isn't free. It can actually be quite expensive, especially if it gets a lot of traffic and requires a dedicated or private server. And the owner of this site does not charge registration fees. This site is free for anyone to use.
To complain about a few ads to offset the cost isn't being sensitive to the situation at all.
The information & conversation is still here for your to read...that's all that should really matter.

And as far as what kind of server the sites are on...

diychatroom.com
Seems to be on it's own server...or at least a virtual private server. No other sites seem to be using the same IP.

contractortalk.com
43 other sites share the same IP as contractortalk.com. So it looks to be on a shared server...but, to be honest, 43 other domains isn't a lot in shared server world.

roofingtalk.com
Is on the same shared server as contractortalk.com.

Dedicated servers aren't cheap at all...they are quite pricey. Virtual private servers are a little more affordable, but still not cheap.
Shared servers can actually be rather cheap, depending on who you go with...but again, still costs money.

So there you go.

Guess I need to go ahead and leave. Some of the things happening here make no sense.

The forum I spend the most time on, has tons of ads. They have become invisible to me. Like the ads on TV, I hit the mute button and they go away. Try to ignore them and see if they go away.

Apparently I'm completely missing out on all the good stuff. I haven't noticed any changes recently.

I haven't noticed the ads on either of the other forums. I just don't care for the layouts. I was not complaining, I don't think. It was just a heads-up that I might not be around much, if any. Doubt I'll be missed. I'm sure nobody has missed me at the other places.
Not caring for the formats is a good reason to leave. If this one doesn't follow suit, I'll be here.

It isn't the formats for me. It's the erratic behavior of the mods.

Really?
For me, it's all about the information and conversation.
An attractive format it nice...but good info can always trump that imo.
And personally, the formats of the other sites seem quite nice.
