I'm gonna miss this place!

Nathan changed the format of two other forums I frequented. I can't stand them, nor navigate them! I expect this one to follow suit one day and I guess I'll be dropping it from favorites too. ( Not that I ever contributed much of value anyway.) That's the bad news.
The good news is that I'll spend less time on the net and more with family and friends.

Changed how? I'm guessing maybe he upgraded to vBulletin 4.0 (this one is running 3.8.1). If that's the case, time to adapt. Software changes. Are you still using Windows 95 because you didn't want to adapt to a newer platform?

rusty baker 01-30-2012 09:34 AM

A lot more ads, probably. That is what happened at Contractor Talk.

I certainly do not like or dislike the formats of either of the other two related forums I frequent, I don't find they're anything to complain over yet they are neither spectacular in presense, but I would not endorse changing this place to be like those two.

My two cents.

Which two forums? I know CT was changed (an I seldom visit any more)

tinner666 01-30-2012 05:25 PM

CT and RoofingTalk. Just have no interest for the look and they're less forum now than something else.

No, I'm not on W '95. Vista, and with nothing to see at either but static ads on 1/2 the page, it's not my cup of tea. I don't even look up to see ads on TV. I post here and did post there during commercials. And worked Sudoku at the same time. More time for family and Sudoku now.

Hm, well that sucks. I wish I could cut back on my internet usage.

oh'mike 01-30-2012 06:08 PM

I did not know----thanks---more time for other things---

rusty baker 01-30-2012 06:15 PM

For those that use Firefox (I don't like it) you can use Adblock and all those ads are just blank space. I still go to CT some but not like I did. I know several who have quit.

I have not noticed any ad's. Then again, I am running Firefox with the adblock extension, so I do not get them.

The ads are probably to help make money to help offset the cost of running this place. I'm guessing each site is on it's own dedicated server due to the amount of traffic. A dedicated server typically goes for 100-200 bucks a month.

gregzoll 01-30-2012 07:27 PM

Actually Red, most are on a shared server, running in some form of Virtual machine. That way you can have numerous sites on one server. Bad thing is, if the server you are on, gets attacked for one of the other sites running on it, they can take your site down also.

Red Squirrel 01-30-2012 07:29 PM

With the traffic the sites get though, I would guess they're on a dedicated server, but maybe they're on a premium shared package that does not oversell, too.

rusty baker 01-30-2012 07:36 PM

I have cut way back here too. Place is not the same without Bud.

You would be amazed at how robust the servers are and the fact that most have fiber to the server, or gigabyte connections, depending on the colocation.

Also some sites like Livejournal, have multiple servers running their databases, and yes depending on the size of the site, they could be on a dedicated server. Doubtful that just one site of the many for the few that Nathan runs are each on one server. Most likely shared on one server, or spread across different servers, if he did not specify how, when they were set up.
