Gee, Handy Vinny, I do hope you are just trying to be funny. You sound frighteningly like the CoC Bible thumpers I finally left behind me along with the dust shaken off my shoes.

If the tenor does happen to be serious, it's not a problem. I mean the reason for the season, himself, had no real problem with that kind of thing. Would you believe he never initiated even one neighborhood petition?

I'd hit the Thanks Button ten more times but it won’t let me.

I even had some college kids show up to do a quick film of the display for a College course
They knocked on the door & wanted to know if they could video the display...it was late
I said sure..."Just let me turn the rest of the display back on"
(them) "The rest ?"

I told them to just walk in my existing footprints (snow) to avoid electrical wires etc

I came across this discussion on another thread, and I can't say I'm surprised. Vinny, maybe if you learned to live and let live instead of penning "letters of complaint" and sending them to people whose decorations bother you, people in your neighborhood wouldn't ding-dong-ditch or graffiti your house. Maybe give that some thought

My brother lives near the guy who has this elaborate light display that changes to the rhythm of Christmas music (usually Manheim Steamroller). You've probably seen his videos on YouTube.

The police finally had to ask him to stop doing it because it was creating ridiculous traffic congestion through the neighborhood. Sad...but understandable.

(Scuba Dave! Any chance of resizing your pic? That's what made this thread go wide-screen!)

Vin, he might have a point there. If you get holiday lights banned from your neighborhood I will predict you will be an expert on graffiti removal in the next couple months. Also get a tall ladder for removing the TP from your trees, and remember not to stomp on any burning bags you find on your porch!!

Best of luck

It seems to me that you are trying to explain away--if not advocate--vandalism. How dare you, sir. You should be ashamed of yourself.

Live and let live? Now you are pointing your finger at me. Maybe you should try looking in the mirror next time you do that.

Please, tell me exactly what laws am I breaking, Mr. Equator, by drafting letters of complaint and trying to improve upon the current Code Enforcement situation in my town?

Holiday decorations do not usually come up with code enforcement
...at least not as far as the type of decorations
It does come up when supplying power
And some Towns/HOA's do have regulations that require decorations to come down within 90 days...in some warmer areas by Jan 31st

What you are doing I would consider harrassment
And I'd post a sign stating no tresspassing
Then have you arrested
And yeah...I know a lot of kids who would target a house that tried to eliminate Christmas decorations

The more posts you enter on this site
The more I have convinced that you bring bad luck down upon yourself by your actions

You may not be breaking any laws, but you sure would be known as "the Grinch across the street". people who spend their time writing complaint letters and stirring crap are normally frowned upon. There's a lot of people like that where I work, and they are well known... not in a good way.

You have inspired me to see how much Christmas lights and other decorations my 100 amp panel can handle, though.

I am not going to pretend that I don’t see where you are coming from—I definitely do.

And, I am not taking an issue with Scuba Dave's personal decorating activities, which take place far, far away from Chicago.

But, the question you should consider asking yourself is:

Even though I love decorating for Christmas, is it really in the best interest of the neighborhood?

If you meditate on this for a while, maybe you will see my point of view, too.

Just imagine arriving home after a long day at work, when all you want to do is put your feet up and read a book… yet you can’t. In fact, doing so is impossible, all thanks to one of your self-absorbed neighbors who has decided to erect a 30-foot, luminescent Easter Bunny in their front yard, which (unfortunately for you) is across the street and four doors down from your house.

Sounds like you are less concerned about the good of the neighborhood, but more about everone else complying to your own sense of good taste.

Ask yourself this :

Even though I hate looking at Christmas decorations, is banning them really in the best interest of the neighborhood?

if your neighbors enjoy decorating enough to get you to start a petition, I'm guessing the answer is no

Yes it is in the best interest of the neighborhood & my Town
People who come to visit often fill up with gas locally, hit Dunkin Donuts down the street, have dinner locally
Only a Scrooge can't see this

Maybe I should contact some of my Christmas decorating friends & see if they can't setup a display or two dozen near you
I know if someone knocked on my door to sign such a petition I would immediately go out & decorate...even more

Seems to be a hot topic, and everyone will have their views, Its sometimes hard to view ourselves in certain situations. Its one thing if something is next door to us or is blocks away. If you are driving to go look at a display, it ends when you drive back home, if you live next door to one, it ends when the season is over. I like driving by displays, but I've never lived next door to one so I actually can't comment on how it would make me feel. Being that its only september, we can't be calling anyone a scrooge yet.

Allow me to state my humble opinion:

My neighbors who engage in excessive Christmas decorating and other histrionic holiday behavior such as carolling are the real scrooges and/or grinches.
